I agree and disagree at the same time, and I think that is why the smoking ban is such a huge topic of debate. I agree that it is legal, and therefore everyone has a right to do what they want. However, as a non-smoker, I have the right to walk down the street or enter a building and expect my health will not be jeopardized. Same as the right to drive my car and expect to not get hit by another driver who is under the influence or on the phone or otherwise not paying attention. We all have rights, and this ban is stretching both sides. No matter which way they go, there will be a loosing side, and they will be bitter.

With that said, think of this. Smoking is down to 20%. That means 80% of the population are non-smokers. Who do you think will eventually win? And please no bashing, I'm not trying to be rude, just stating facts and my opinions. I could really care less, as my biggest worry is not the smoking ban, it's our fight against breast cancer.

I would be one of the smokers who stopped when the bans went up and so did the cigarette prices. Three years now!

I use to think the bans were stupid but now that I don't smoke, even I have to admit that it's nice going into public and being able to eat without having someone blowing smoke in my face. Not to mention that when I did quit, I had places to go that weren't tempting for me, instead of staying locked up in the house, lol.

When we were little, our parents told us "smoke goes to beauty," let us ride in the back window ledge of the car,
cooked eggs in bacon grease, let us climb the giant slide at the park, run the neighborhood, .......etc.

....now with that being said, I'm glad they have a smoking ban in restaurants & hospitals, car seat laws,
but I'm totally bummed that they took out most all of the giant slides at the parks*(because of lawsuits) and my
kids live across a bridge surrounded by a river on three sides so they surely don't run the streets like we did.
I must be getting old~

I am a smoker and have no prob with the ban. Bars would be nice to be able to smoke in though. But this trying to ban everywhere else is extreme. I should be able to have a smoke in an outdoor place without a fine.

I think I am gonna pass out from the shock. I agree with Harlanshollowfarms.

However, I live in CA. Smoking in any business establishment has been prohibited for so long now, it just really doesn't make a difference to me. I am a smoker. I walk far away to have one on breaks. I don't loiter around doorways smoking either to make a point. It is MY habit and those who don't smoke shouldn't have to deal with it.

What I get ticked at is the city politicos that want to ban smoking OUTSIDE. Give me a freakin break.

Banning smoking outside, I think, is completely CRAZY! Just like at one point they were talking about banning smoking in a car. WHAT?! That's like saying you can't smoke in your own very' home.

I get public places inside but some are getting a little ridiculous.

Tell that to nuts in CA. We have several citiies proposing a ban on outdoor smoking. Really? How about banning indoor drinking?? Stupid.

It's legal somewhere in the U.S. for a minor to buy tobacco?? I thought we did away with that a long time ago.

In most states, it is only illegal to sell tobacco to a minor. There are no laws against the minor who does the purchasing.

If an officer saw a minor with a beer in his/her hand, there'd be a ticket issued....not so for tobacco.

Put me down for banning smoking in rental property if the property owner wants or being able to collect a smoking damage deposit.

Indoor smokers ruin: the carpet, carpet pad, blinds, screens, vents, walls, ceilings. There is no legal security deposit that covers the costs that smoking causes the owner.

Walls have to be washed, lacquered to seal, primed and then painted. Ceilings have to be lacquered (often 2x) (yucky popcorn) It takes 2x the time to scrub every little crack on the windows to get the orange off. Then there are the butt burns on counters, vinyl etc.

Smoking really does damage other peoples property when you rent. And it can be impossible to even show a smokers apartment until it has been totally scrubbed/painted/cleaned/aired out and that can add another 6-7 weeks of lost rent. (New tenants have to give notice too)

Tis true...
A parent or guardian would have to hunt down the person that SOLD tobacco to a minor to get a charge aganist the seller...
Otherwise the cops do nothing if they see a kid smoking... weird, i know!
