sn0wwhite's Wichita Coop for the Twin Cities

Congrats on a job well done. Hopefully eggs soon.

Thanks, Walt! Yes... I really hope any day now. We are just under 6 months old with them. It's time. [Taps foot and checks nest box again...]

Hey! The coop looks great. We'd love to post some on our Wichita Cabin Coop Facebook page if you'd be willing to share them.

Best regards,

Thanks for stopping by my thread! I'd be happy to share. I did like your page over there... what's the best way to share them?

Pick out a few of the shots that you like best and email them to us at [email protected] ... We'll post them with your name (however you would like it shown) and your city/state.

I love to see all of the ideas folks use to really make the Wichita Cabin Coop their own. Love the etched glass windows and how the color matches your home. Beautiful job!

Best regards,

I'll do that.

And here is how the coop and chickens fared in the first snow.

Oh that's not really a snow(heehee)...how long did it take to melt?
Did the chickies walk on it?

We had one like that a week or so ago, was gone in a few hours...didn't faze the chooks.

No, it was NOT too much snow, but only Omelet the alpha chicken stepped on it and quickly stepped off again. The backyard melted today so it's gone there but I suspect they're going to try to avoid it.

So I am happy to report that my ADOR1 has worked successfully now for 7 nights and mornings in a row. Last Saturday I disconnected and reconnected the battery 3 times (just to be sure and to make sure the door was in the right position when I reconnected) and it's been working since.

I don't know what caused it to stop, and I am still cautious and checking it daily... but so far so good again.

I'm still waiting for our first egg.... and I'm thinking about changing the light that comes on with the timer. I find that there is more poop in the coop now because the light comes on since it's not daylight the door isn't open so they have nothing to do but hang out and poop. I don't have any food or water in there either so I worry a little that they'll get bored and peck at each other.

Does anyone have any thoughts about if I should move the light on the timer to the outside run? My theory is then that the light out there will cause the door to open and maybe then they'll get up and go out there to get light, food, water and do their pooping out there. What do you all think? Will that work possibly or am I risking them being too cold or will they be too smart and realize the sun isn't up so they'll just stay in the coop anyway?

I'm not doing artificial light for our girls. I've noticed they've really slacked off in laying. I don't think our EE is going to lay until next spring. I'm not worried about it. Personally, I'd rather have them put their energy into staying warm.

That said, I'm not sure if the outside light would fool them in the morning. I know that when I go down at night and turn on the light in the run, if the coop door is open, the girls will come parading out. They don't seem to care as long as it's light for them.

Hmmmm....there isn't a timer option with the ADOR, correct? That would be nice, you could time it the same as the light.
Maybe put another light out there to trigger the door?
