sn0wwhite's Wichita Coop for the Twin Cities

Myself--and of course I don't claim to have all the answers-- But per gallon of water I haul out to the waterer...I put in a capful of the ACV... I just pour it into the little cap that comes with the jar of vinegar itself. It looks to be about a tsp. Sometimes if I've run out of ACV they go without it a week or two...but every day they get it. I do it in the winter too. I guess I see them having no regard for where they are stepping -- in poo or their food or both and I just keep it up. A jar lasts quite a while around here.

I'm going to see how it goes for now and stop using the ACV maybe until spring. Then I can give them their plastic waterer again. I think it would melt on the heated base I bought and I think thawed water has to be better than worrying too much about ACV.

That's scary about your Lab and the galvanized water dish. My chihuahua has little ceramic dishes, but it's good to know since one is cracked and he may be getting new dishes for Christmas.

I also have a small flock (4 chickens) in a suburban setting so I suspect that my risk of disease and other contamination is smaller. I could also just be very naive.

Today was so rainy and cloudy... I think it got dark at 3pm! So, I turned the light on in the run to give them a little more outdoor time. It wasn't too cold, just rainy and dreary. I really like that added light!

When some of my last stragglers finish their molt I think I'm going to start adding some light just to jump start a couple into laying eggs again. It's so dark all the time this time of year. And I've got zippo for eggs.

First Egg today!

Sunny did it!

It's a nice size one too. I'm so proud of her. I had just about given up too and figured I'd just be waiting for spring!

Sunny is the sweet disposition Buff Orpington. She's been acting like she was ready for about 2 weeks, but this morning she squatted for me and wouldn't get out of the nest box.

I haven't weighed anyone, but I did have to pick her up twice today because she was bound and determined to squat for me and evidently I wasn't paying enough attention so she kept hopping up onto the food can...

Anyway, she is mostly fluff too. She's bigger than the Chihuahua, but I'd be surprised if she weighed even 3 pounds.
