I like the sand because I can easily and quickly get most of the poop out, and I think that helps for air quality. I have less ventilation than recommended because I only have 4 chickens. So, less breath and more body heat needed. Both the run and coop house could accommodate 5 chickens easily, so my theory is that there is less need for open holes because they have good air exchange.
So far, even in these brutal temperatures there is no signs of frost on the windows or walls and their combs and waddles look fine.
Chickiegrrl, did you insulate your coop? I didn't but I'm not sure how much it would help. Oh, also, the sand is not frozen solid. It still rakes and sifts easily.
