SNAKE!!!(now a dead snake) Snake lovers, don't look.

Found this GREAT fishing spot on the riverbank, catching all sorts of goodies, and then there was this odd hissing sound.... guess Mr. Cottonmouth wanted the fish for himself.... we jumped in the back of the pickup to escape, barely gathering tackle as we went.... only time I've ever ridden in the back of a pickup.

Cottonmouths will chase you and in that aspect are more aggressive. Copperheads bite more people than any other snake in the US. Copperheads, unlike many other snakes make no threat signal but strike as soon as the feel a threat. I meant aggressive in that aspect.

Cottonmouths are 10 times more aggressive in the wild...been chased by one across a canal, foot bridge and my yard.

OMG!! I can't imagine being CHASED by a snake!!

I am glad none of the rattle snakes I've found in my yard did that. I find 'em, and then watch them a bit (from a distance) and then give them their space. I loathe rats,so, I have no problems with rattlers.

i didn't know cottonmouths would CHASE me, though!! I heard that they are very cranky and mean. jeeez, i have major heebie jeebies right now!

That would be rare, they want to get to safety like water. Or a place to hide.

I'm sorry if I started some conflict with me killing snakes a few pages back... I personally don' care if they eat bugs, so do my birds, so do all the snakes that aren't in MY chicken coop. It may sound barbaric to kill so,ething "harmless" I f you've ever gotten bit by one, it doesn't hurt. But it sparked a fire for eternal hate for snakes. If they so choose to come into my structure, (where they aren't killing many bugs) I'm going to take care of them. Snakes always seem to attack me. It's just a personal hate. I don't like them at all. Please don't rag on me for killing the few snakes that get into the coop, I know YOU might think its bad, but there are plenty of snakes. I'm well aware they are "harmless" but I'm not damaging the population. If you really wanna hear it, I let one go today.

2-Thanks for posting pic. I have seen that snake in my backyard, and thought it was a good snake. OOPS!! (i usually find rattle snakes, nests, every year back there, so i was kinda stoked to find the other snake, thinking, cool, a non-venomous snake.

as far as being a great shot, I was using shotshell for my .357mag. Its kind like a shotgun shell but for a revolver. It makes it so much easier.

I found this one lounging in threshold of one of the breeder pens, I keep this old winchester pump in a cabinet out in the coop just for surprises like this.

I found a lot of this thread amusing. Most folks who are against killing snakes go on to say they do not have venomous snakes where they are. Those of us who do have them and have them invade our space are less sympathetic to them.

Our farm was infested with copperheads a few years ago. They reproduced in the walls of our barn and young ones would fall out of the loft. We killed all we could! In the right situation they will reproduce prolificly. That same year a co-worker's 5 year old granddaughter was bitten by a copperhead as she reached into some brush to catch a baby lizard. It was not fatal but very serious and painful for the child and horrifying for the family.

If snakes venture into areas around animals and children, the risk is high that a serious confrontation will take place. My grandkids, miniature horses and other pets don't go into what I would consider their territory and they better not slither into ours.

Not giving anyone a hard time about killing any snake, just info that most do lots of good. Moving them is a good thing if they are eating your eggs.

Snake hater started with Adam!!! Great you let one go.

Know lots of people have fear of snakes, but most dont understand all the facts about how much good they do.

We have both, and I still dont kill any. Understand why people do with small kids around. Oh the day old copperheads are just as deadly as mommy and daddy.
