snakes

love chickens hate snakes cant wait for my chickens in spring but don't like the idea of snakes crawling around my coop...yikes makes me nervous have a bug fear of snakes...

Have a friend that will even find a snake swallowing eggs beneath a hen. She finds snakes in her chicken house on a regular basis. Maybe the chickens are used to snakes being there. I have peafowl and have never had a snake get an egg. I guess I don't have any large enough on the property to swallow a large peahen egg. I am very concerned about my quail so will have to give a lot of thought as to how I'll protect them. I don't like bugs and I don't like snakes. Ugh!

Found a rattle snake in the pen when I was a kid...had 4 egg size bulges and couldn't get back through the wire. I went in to get dad to come look at it and when we walked back out it had regurgitated the eggs and escaped. Had no clue that could or would do that.

I have come home to find baby chicks dead and slimy so I know snakes can regurgitate things. It was so sad. I am just totally afraid of snakes, all of them. I know it sounds silly. I went one year and got hypnotized to be able to deal with them. That summer I think I killed about 5 of them in mt hen house. The next year I wasn't as afraid, this summer I fell over a block running from one and bruised my leg so bad I couldn't touch it for about a week so this spring I'm going for another treatment. I already have plenty of bullets for when I do find them.

Good for you...don't give up. We need to protect the birds that are in our charge. When you say "It was so sad". So sad to me hurts. I cry. I know some of you that raise the quail for food will think I'm nuts but each and every one of my birds deserve the right to die of old age. Doesn't bother me one bit to purchase meat, poultry or fowl at the store and consume it but would never eat any of my own.

I've not had snake problems but figure I eventually will. Friends and neighbors are dealing with them all the time so guess I've been blessed. I don't want to put food out there for them so as much as I'd like to release my dozen White Bobwhites in a huge ground aviary I won't be able to. They will have to tough it out in a 3 by 10 foot enclosure that is only about 3 feet high. It's built in the back of one of the aviary pens up off the ground under a roof and mostly wrapped in small hardware cloth. A snake would mostly have to crawl up Mueller brand metal siding to get to them. I feel they will be fine in there.

Regarding bullets. If I were to shoot my peafowl would go crazy. I do need to get one of those gadgets to catch snakes will. Snake pole or whatever it's called. I read having a King Snake solves problems of other snakes....they even eat Rattle Snakes. Says if you have a large King Snake on your property the other snakes will stay away. Did I read that on this thread?

Yes, you did read that. Apparently Bull snakes are the German Shepherd of snakes. However I would probably freak out over him aa well.
