Snapped neck

Has anyone ever had a chicken snap their neck trying to fly in their coop? We found one of our 8 week old chickens in the middle of the coop with straight legs and head bent sideways. Thinking maybe it tried to fly up and hit a beam or walk and snapped it’s neck

Chickens are pretty bouncy and their necks are pretty flexible.

I'm assuming the chick is deceased?

Any wounds or missing feathers?

What breed?

In my experience a snapped neck is usually from a dog trying to play with a chicken

It’s an Americana and Easter egger mix. But no wounds or missing feathers, chick was dead. Found in the middle of the coop at 10pm after we had been out there around 8pm and they were all fine.

I agree with @Red Mangrove. It sounds like to me something got in the coop and tried to take a chicken and was interrupted.

I have taken to shutting up my coop before evening as I've had a raccoon waltz on in and try to steal eggs after sundown. Now I take no chances!
