Sneezing chicken with roundworms

Cassandra, since the post where I recommended Safeguard, you stated you wormed with Wazine (piperizine). Did you see roundworms since worming with Wazine?

I will be picking up some Safegaurd in the morning. We noticed the sneezing the seconded we got her home from our local chicken swap, I have no idea the conditions she was kept in before we got her... All I know is that they kept her broody so she could hatch all their chicks from all the chickens. She is pretty skinny and molting. We have her on the same egg laying food our other chickens are on, with added meal worms, crushed eggs shells and fresh basil. We did look in her mouth and throat and there was no signs of Gape Worm, but we did notice that one noise hole is clogged so we tried to clean it out as best we could. She is still sneezing. As for her water I change it twice a day, and put fresh garlic and wazine in it. I am also giving her an herb tea in the morning. Her behavior is typical of a chicken nothing abnormal, just the sneezing.

Good morning Cassandra S, just stopping by to check up on you and to see if you managed to clear the obstruction in your chickens Nostril or if she was still sneezing ......

I saw one worm yesterday and I have not seen any this morning. As for the sneezing, we cleared out what looked like built up sand from part of the nostril, but after a close inspection it looks like there might be more... It's so hard to tell... Chickens don't exactly hold still lol. We are going to try again tonight to see if we can clear more out, it also looks like this nostril is smaller then the other. Her other one is much more open.

A plugged nare can be flushed out with sterile water and a syringe. Gently hold the bird in a comfortable sitting position. You can wrap the body in a towel if you want to keep the wings from flapping. The bird's beak needs to point towards the floor while pushing water out the end of the syringe against the plugged nostril. A 3cc syringe without a needle works well. Keeping the bird's head pointed toward the floor prevents the possibility of aspiration.

Thank you! You have been so very helpful! I wish I had known I would love urbanfarming so much and would have taken 4h as a kid. I just called my husband and we are going to try this when he gets home! Thank you! I hope this is the solution to her sneezing :)

update: we cleared out both sides of her nose...I feel so bad for this poor little Silkie (Pearl), like I said we bought her from our local chicken swap, which is not regulated by any means, I can only guess what kind of conditions she was living in! She can now breath so much better, and her cluck is 100 times louder lol. She is still making the sneezing like sound but it's not as frequent and it's kind of odd but she is only doing it when we enter the guest room to give her some attention... So we are going to keep
her in our guest room for the rest of the month and just going to monitor her. If she shows any other signs of illness we have decided that we will look for another home for her (or someone who can afford to put money into vet bills so find out exactly what is wrong with her) or have her put down. Like I said as of now, she only has this odd sneeze like sound, but everything else is normal and she is starting to warm up to us holding her. I hope is pulls through and can join my lovely ladies in mid May :)

Nice to read you have her all cleaned up and she sound a lot better now ..

Have you ever heard about Echinacea you can purchase it at Wal-Mart
or most any other store that has a health department in the Vitamin
section just one pill in a galleon of water just open the pill by pulling on
each end and out comes the powder and mix in the water and it is all
natural I use it with my chickens when it gets windy and it works very
well for most problems ....
