On Monday the 27th of July, 2009, my mother and I purchased chicks and pullets. One batch was a group of four seemingly healthy RIR pullets. I'd guess they're a month or a month and a half old. The farmer did not tell us how old they were, but they look about that age to me. I should mention that the guy had over 1,000 birds. He kept them in pretty cramped spaces, and his cages looked dirty to me. I should also mention that when he caught the chicks with a net, one of the birds that we bought got his head stuck. It took him several minutes to get it out. Poor bird. I do not know their exact weights either. We also got a pair of bantams from him. I do not know what kind they are. They are probably about 4 months old. Lastly, I bought a pair of Silkie chicks. They're no more than a week old.

On to the problem. All of the birds are sneezing. The RIRs are the worst. They sneeze almost constantly. The bantams are sneezing often, too. The Silkies hardly ever sneeze, but they do still sneeze. All of the birds are on medicated chick starter. The RIRs just started getting a 1/4 teaspoon of Duramycin in their quart waterer once a day today. The bantams and Silkies are on Merrick's vitamins. They get a 1/4 teaspoon every day. Everyone's waste look okay except for one RIR's. It's a bit runny. The outer part is yellow and the inner part is normally colored. We're going to take the one chick to the vet tomorrow mornign if she do
esn't look any better. She has a redness in her eye, and it looks pretty watery. All of the chicks are in carriers, crates, or rubber maid containers with no lid. Thye are on pine shaving bedding. The RIRs have newspaper under their shavings.
Does anyone know what is wrong with my chicks?

By the way we paid:
$8 a piece for the little RIRS
$7 a piece for the bantams
and $5 a piece for the Silkies. We got a $2 discount each on the Silkies. I don't know why. Does anyone else think that's pricey? I'm starting to wonder if he knew the birds he was selling us were sick. The guy seems suspicious to me for some reason.
P.S., The most sick little RIR stinks really bad. None of the others do. The smell makes me feel sick.

Immediately separate the sick roo that smells bad... many things can be spread through the waterer/feeder... even though the rest of the birds have been exposed it can still make a difference so separate him.
Get some OXINE and mist regularly... it will help. Google "Theodore" and "OXINE" and you will find an article .
If you cannot find a source of OXINE there are several on the web where you can order including First State Vet Supply > the owner (Peter Brown) is very knowledgeable on medications and is very helpful with your questions... there is a contact page at his store site and you can send your questions to him there.
