Snotty, vicious, gotta-be-a-roo and my new scary voice.

WildBurroShirts.com :

Ohhhh, you're scaring me!!!!

Roosters hang onto the hen by the eyelid/face and yank their head back and forth??? It sounds pretty S&M to me....

Got an BBQ sauce?

No! Not that part! The part about "but hangs on by his beak to their heads as they try and run screaming off!"

The roo will grab the hen by the back of the neck/head to hold her still for mating. Immature pullets yell and squirm and basically act like they are being killed. Chicken mating is not pretty.

It's supposed to snow and storm for the next week but they've got two sliding glass doors mounted as windows so they'll enjoy the show!

He does sound very special. Especially the cuddles part. The ones that walk around on me like I'm a living room couch are for the most part after food but about three of them do love to be pet. And one coos almost like a pigeon when you pet her.

Do you have any eggs/chicks from that roo still? I know I had to put down a mare due to arthritus but I look out the window at her daughter every day and it helps. Maybe you'll get one from the same line who has a similar personality?

I hope so. There are special animals, just like special people, who totally enrich your life.

Hmmm..."happier sleeping". Maybe I shouldn't bring her in at night? I thought she'd just nod off. But maybe it's bad for them, losing their beauty sleep?

I'm looking forward to all of them except for Coburn...I know 'moms' aren't supposed to say this but I never liked him because even as a three day old chick he'd bite the other chicks faces.

I'm still so glad I got chickens. And very grateful to all of the cool people on BYC who help answer all my chicken questions!!!

(THANKS, GUYS!!!

Whew! That's a little better. Like the biker bumper stickers, "If you're gonna ride my --- at least pull my hair."

The back of the head would be ok if that was 'normal' mating behavior.

The eyelid/front of the face is not.

He's going to stop it or he's going to be doing it elsewhere because I love the girls too much to see them pecked so hard near their eyes. They scream and cower afterwards...not pretty indeed.

Thanks for clarifying though.

Yep, I hatched one of his chicks the spring before he died. The chick was also the offspring of my favorite hen, too, so it made me even happier. I managed to squeeze a little girl out of them. She carried the blue gene for some reason, so besides her off color, she looks like a female version of her daddy. Her father's wit but Mommy's lack of patience.

Don't worry. All chickens are motivated (or manipulated) by food. It's how I get all of the girls to follow me around, but I know they love me anyway! My girls tend to bark at me, not coo, so consider yourself lucky!

And don't worry about disliking him. When I ordered, I was looking forward to my black silkie and he turned out to be a demon. Soon after my other roo died, he started acting friendlier toward me. I still have no idea what that's about-but no! I'm not even bothering to ask questions! I'm just happy.

The last roo in those pics growls at me-I'm talking full-on GROWLING! Like a dog. He hisses at me wheh he bites, too. I still have a nasty bite on my hand from me trying to socialize him. Oh well, doesn't seem to be working.

I'm going to call it a night. Tell me how the water-blasting works out for you! You're giving me ideas now for the next generation...

Glad you got someone from his line even if they have no patience.

OK...so that night I just held him upside down and yelled at him each time I'd see him peck at somebody's eye. Because you scared me with the "roo-sicles" line.
big_smile.png

He got all growly/nippy at me and I yelled in his face.

And (please don't call those nice young men in their clean white coats) but I began crowing.
big_smile.png

I figured he'd get ticked and crow back.

Fast forward to today and I'm having major penguin trouble (the little 'lorps squeezed themselves thru the fence and I was trying to push/pull them one way or the other to get them back in the brooder...idiots. So I'm bent over trying not to kill them as I extricate them and I hear a grownup crow: it's him.

And he's yours. Or anybody on BYC that wants him (he's in Carson City, NV and I won't ship). He's an EE, big for his age, hatched 12-17-08 by Ideal. He's red and black with a big black beard.

And a big attitude. Free to anybody on BYC. Come get him!

Ooh, you've got quite a little stinker over there! Sorry to hear about your roo-trouble. I spent alot of time this summer out with the flock, having nothing better to do. At the time, only one roo crowed. I was hanging out of the hay bales, and I hear this very high pitched crow-new to me! It was from, yes, my sweet little banty. It really wasn't annoying-it was too cute! Then, my evil black Silkie appeared out of nowhere, and for the first time, he threw back his head, out of his little mouth came the most disturbing, deafening sound I ever heard! He sounded like someone's dying horse!

So, in one day, two roos learned a new trick.

Well, you knew he HAD to be a boy, right? It's not like you should be surprised! That's what I like about the attitude-you start making predictions right away! I saw the thread you started for him. I wish you luck finding him a new home/dinner reservation. It was only a matter of time, eh?

"he sounded like someone's dying horse"....ha!

Rooster Coburn makes the perfect cartoon chicken cock-a-doodle-do sound. Like he's read the handbook or something.

But that grabbing the girls by the eyelid...that has to stop. Or I need to buy 14 eye patches.

No takers yet on him....

And I am grabbing him twice a day and putting him down on his back and holding him like you do with a hyperactive puppy. He hates it.

Maybe he'll run away from home when I start free ranging? I'll pack him a lunch...

Okay, I am new to the chicken world and new to this site, but I just have to say you people are HILARIOUS! It made my whole day to read through this thread, with all of your great visual descriptions! I am laughing my head off. (And I will try to avoid having a rooster at all costs)

Hah! You can only hope, right? I have a roo who, every day, I take and sit down with him. I force my hand on his back so he sits down and I also push his head down. I keep him like this for a few minutes, and when he makes no noise or doesn't try to escape, I gentally put him down. Usually works for the day, then I have to do the same thing tomorrow. Roos are tough.

It's weird that he is pulling them like that...shouldn't he be working on finding his way into their hearts and not blinding them?
roll.png

Hope you have some takers soon! It's cruel, but worst comes to worst and you chould just drive and drop him off somewhere. I persoanlly wouldn't like to do that...my guilt would corrupt me!

Welcome to BYC. My rooster is my favorite member of my flock. He's a goof and the girls get irritated with him sometimes, but I love him just the same.
