SNOW.... and very bemused chickens!

I let mine out in the snow and all you see is a beeline from the big coop to one of the smaller ones... where if you check later in the day, there is another beeline right to the house where they end up. They don't like the snow too much either.

Same sort of story here in upstate NY! Opened their door to a snow covered run on Saturday and my usual parade of bouncing pullets stopped short. Not ONE of them stepped foot outside. They just looked up at me like, "what is THIS?!?!?"

Some snow had melted this morning and I gave them another shot at coming out this AM....one or two had a quick frolick outside, but they went right back in. They don't seem to like winter any more than their Momma does!!!

Ok we have NO snow but it's pretty cold for us right now (50's). My Millies just huddle together shivering. I keep thinking they'll get used to it but no, they just look too pitiful:)

Seachick-I think it is too funny about your birds. Maybe they will get used to it or...way more time spent cleaning their house!

Went out to feed the other critters and the snow that was "blocking" the north end of the run melted and there was no problem crossing the Abyss. I have noticed that egg production is down about 30 percent, and that's just fine. I have been feeding far fewer treats lately. if they get a pumpkin, squash or oatmeal and yogurt the next day there is runny poop all over the roost and fewer eggs that day. I learned that all the good stuff I was feeding them from the garden all summer does not seem to help them in the winter. They are only getting treats during the warmest days of the week now. In addition to that I am trying to get in the run during the day regardless of the temps to better prepare them for the coming winter. All things in moderation for this beginner. I let them tell me what they need.

I haven't had eggs in days now - I only had the three Mille's laying and they seem to have stopped - I'm ok with it, I didn't get much chance at the eggs anyway - the kids ate em like CANDY!

Mine are still laying almost every day and it worries me. I have no problem with them "taking a break". Goodness girls, dont you know your supposed to slack in the winter time?

We even had a bunch of snow here this weekend... the chicks hated it. We're back to RAIN now! 4.5 inches so far today, I think the chicks hate that worse. I dried them with a big fluffy towel tonight, lucky chicks!

Here are my girls on their first day out in snow! They seemed to like it - but later they went back in the coop for some soup and then settled in to watch cartoons.
