Snow Storm Surprize

Yes I saved him- hopefully will get him sold to a fur buyer / taxidermist.

Do they live in Illinois too?? I hope not now!

Yes they are in IL.

Last year we lost 18 mandarins, both colored and white, a falcated drake, 2 chiloe widgeon, 1 smew, a silver redhead and a few others to a mink in one night. This spring we lost several Snow & Blue geese to a mink and it scared all of them off the nest- including Barnacles, Barheads, Cacklers, Richardsons & Aleutins, so our hatch was not very good!

OK so a newbie question... if your shooting the animals that you have caught in the "humane traps"... why not just set traps that will do the deed.. now I would gather that perhaps catching them and maybe putting them out of their misery quicker is what you have in mind, not to mention the trapping isue/kids/dogs/cats... is this why?? (we have everything from skunk to bear here... and needing to learn!

fast )

We intend next week to look into a gun but are a tad concerned on keeping something loaded in our home and this live trap thing.... I need to know?

We have three dogs, a fat orange cat and a parakete (does not go out LOL) so I want no harm to them...

Hillsvale, the other kind of trap is a leg trap -- it doesn't kill the animal. It catches it's leg in a set of steel jaws. If the trapper doesn't check regularly the animal will commonly chew off it's own leg to get lose. All the way around that's a nasty trap. Not to mention that it is not discerning. It will catch a kitten or a small child as easily as it will a raccoon.

It appears that this mink wasn't shot. It looks wet to me -- I am guessing that the original poster dumped the trap, mink and all in a barrel of water and drowned it.

If you aren't comfortable or experienced with guns you might want to reconsider your options. A really well constructed run and coop beats a loaded gun any day. An ounce of prevention, as it were.

correction---
there are conibear traps which kill the animal.

I enjoy birds free ranging around the farm- plus over 100 geese would be very cramped if they had to stay locked in a mink proof pen 24/7.

Hillsvale----

We have dogs so do not want to use leg hold traps or conibears around the buildings. Altough leg hold traps work great for fox and coyotes in the pastures.

Haveing a loaded gun in the house is always a big no no. Guns are fine and owning them as well. Just never have a loaded gun in the house as thats what leads to the headlines you see " boy accidently kills his sister". You just need to be smart with owning weapons.

oh please. If you are going to have a gun for protecting your livestock or family, then an unloaded gun is more than useless. it's an expensive club. An ounce of education is as good as an ounce of prevention.

Besides, not all of us have 3 or 4 year old toddlers running around the house.

LMAO Well by all means just keep yours loaded by your bed. Doesnt have to be a young person makeing the mistake. But you do whatever trips your trigger boyd. Ive seen diff. If it takes you that long to toss a shell in a gun to go dispatch a varmit you prob. shouldnt own one. Oh Please. lmao

why is it new folks hop on a forum and decide they are suddenly god and know better than everyone else out here in the big wide world?

Of course I have a loaded gun by my bed. I keep a .45 with Glaser's by the bed, and my shoulder holster usually has my .38 with hydra shocks in the drawer when I'm sleeping. A shotgun is also always handy with birdshot. And of course I have kids in my house. If you knew anything about me you would know i have A LOT of kids in my house. They are all educated on firearms. They are all familiar with firearms. They all know how to shoot firearms. They are not fascinated by firearms. A gun is a tool, the same way fire is. How many MORE kids are hurt or killed with fire than with guns? Simple math simple logic.

And Cutrite, can you see all of your property when you go outside? I sure can't, so I usually have at least something on me at all times besides my concealed carry piece.
