I'm the world's worst incubator.
I got cocky with my LG but decided to put it away for winter, and then will do it the RIGHT way. WITH a fan (did I mention that when I said to my husband that a computer fan would really have helped he said "oh, we have like 10 of those in the basement" ARGH!"
Out of 29 eggs, 25 made it to lockdown, and only 4 babies made it, hatching the 23rd day.
I must have run the temps JUST low enough for all of them to grow but JUST a little too slowly to hatch.
It was the worst feeling ever to crack open 20 nearly there perfectly formed little chicks.
The 4 that hatched are perfect little fluffballs. One hatched too slowly and died a few hours later in the brooder.
I blame myself in a lot of ways, because I was soooo sooo good about not opening until after day 21, and not hearing anything....but then of course I had to candle and check them....I'm sure that didn't help.
It was definitely a learning experience in that I need to trust my gut when the air sacs weren't as large as they should be at lockdown, to wait a little longer.
The good part is....like Murphy's Law, as soon as I bought the incubator, 4 out of 5 of my hens have decided to go broody and I have about 14 more eggs going strong in the coop.
I'm sure they'll do better than me.
