for i hope all 9 hatch but i'm not gonna count my chicks till they all hatch out.

Husbands just don't get it!!! My 3 year old gets it...I get it...even the dog gets it. But my husband...totally thinks im crazy too. lol I really want to hatch more since I only got 2 colors, but I don't think I can deal with another failure like this!!! I'm debating taking the heating element out of my LG and putting in my homemade since I don't like the lightbulbs. But then I wonder if its the heating elements thats the problem. 3 out of 20??? 13 made it to lockdown and one died before absorbing the yolk, the rest looked perfect.

I know the disappointment sucks but you have to push on. I was disappointed that I didn't get my lavenders this time. My first hatch I had 29 eggs and only 4 hatched. This time I had 20 and only got 2. I love my fuzzy butts so I keep trying. That's all you can do. Practice makes perfect even tho the imperfections are hard. That is what we signed up for tho sadly so we have to accept and push forward. Keep it up and I know we will get a pop corn bucket of chicks

Lockdown is the longest days of my life!

about 12:30ish pm will be day 21 (tuesday) and yes its been so long a part of me doesnt want to go to bed!!!

I'm the world's worst incubator.
I got cocky with my LG but decided to put it away for winter, and then will do it the RIGHT way. WITH a fan (did I mention that when I said to my husband that a computer fan would really have helped he said "oh, we have like 10 of those in the basement" ARGH!"
Out of 29 eggs, 25 made it to lockdown, and only 4 babies made it, hatching the 23rd day.
I must have run the temps JUST low enough for all of them to grow but JUST a little too slowly to hatch.
It was the worst feeling ever to crack open 20 nearly there perfectly formed little chicks.
The 4 that hatched are perfect little fluffballs. One hatched too slowly and died a few hours later in the brooder.

I blame myself in a lot of ways, because I was soooo sooo good about not opening until after day 21, and not hearing anything....but then of course I had to candle and check them....I'm sure that didn't help.

It was definitely a learning experience in that I need to trust my gut when the air sacs weren't as large as they should be at lockdown, to wait a little longer.

The good part is....like Murphy's Law, as soon as I bought the incubator, 4 out of 5 of my hens have decided to go broody and I have about 14 more eggs going strong in the coop.
I'm sure they'll do better than me.
