So how is Zane doing?

John, good to see you around again! I have some silver sulfadiazene (sp) cream that a wonderful customer gave me. They use it in rehab for hawks and other birds to treat wounds. I'll be using that in the incision. I believe we used it when we were draining it previously. Would that be something similar or should it be sulfa powder, you think? Hawke, I wish I could afford to take him to the vet, but we're on our own with this one.
Zane is an amazingly gentle, communicative, affectionate rooster. I've never seen anything like him. He deserves to get over this!

I know I'm not John, Cyn, but I wanted to give you my two cents worth anyways! I think he needs to be on the sulfa powder along with the cream. There you go! My two cents worth! LOL!

I've seen wounds in other animals that have done this. Usually draining and another round of antibiotics does the trick. Let's hope so this time for your's, DH's, and Zane's sake!

Cyn, was just posting this in hopes that someone here had used this method in Aves (all I know about is the use in humans). Maybe Diana has heard of this. Again, I'd probably stick to the current regimen for the time being, but I'd keep the Sulfa powder in mind.

(will hunt around for specifics the next few days)

I'll do that, thank you. And Stacey, I guess tomorrow he'll start his new antibiotics. Just hope my DH feels better so he can help with this. Kitty, I sure pray you're right. Thought we had it licked, darn it.

Oh Cynthia....you poor dear!! I DO hope your DH is feeling better soon! Jeesh. You both need some GOOD luck....and im sending ot your way. Prayers are out there for you...DH..and Zane.

Hope all goes well with Zane and hubby. My girl started to feel better, so she thought she could just hop on the top roost again, as i watched she didn't make it, and her neck caught the roost instead.

When she landed she stayed put with her wings out.

I'm taking the roost out, and putting a lower one in no other high ones. Hope this discourages her for awhile.

Dang birds, you gotta love them. Hope your Zane gets better, along with all the others out there that might be hurting....

Hiya Cyn... I had not been following Zanes progress and have just come in at the end of this... I have a full day today but will continue to search info for you in the hope that it might be of some use...
re the the article posted by ivan please note:"
"...When used locally, even with the much higher concentration of either sulfanilamide or sulfathiazole obtained in the proximate tissue, no effect upon the healing of the wound edges is demonstrable although the presence of packed clumps of powder in deeper tissues or separating skin edges may mechanically delay healing..."

Please read this(in particular the section on Degenerative Joint Disease) and make note of the references to lavage and debridement and use of chlorhexiodine... which I have also incl a second internet link below ) :
http://www.avianmedicine.net/ampa/16.pdf
(some of the terminology may make ya cross-eyed but persevere as you will understand the relevant info)

http://www.bioone.org/perlserv/?req...&ct=1&SESSID=c4cd326de1b630c41281ab124f539945

",,,,Debridement and lavage, with chlorhexidine at a 0.05% solution being considered to provide optimal results, are required for all wounds. Many topical medications are used to manage open wounds in raptors, including recently developed wound-healing stimulants...."

...when I find more I will post ... :aww

(ETA > you have mentioned several times your financial restrictions ... if this continues to be a problem then note the basic recquirement and technique for lavage and debridement... For topical treatment of the wound if you are unable to find /get the suggested meds then as a last ditch effort please refer to the articles on hoeney and sugar dressings for uulcerated wounds here (note >AFTER proper lavage and debridement) this is in addition to systemic medication and not as replacement for it:
