So how much room does 40 hens/pullets need to be all together?

I agree, a 200sq ft coop and a 400 sq ft run minimum. So an example would be a 15ft by 15ft coop and 20ft by 20ft run. With that many chickens I would aim for as big as possible though. I currently have 14 in a 10x10 coop and 35x25 run and I am at max right now. Any more would be too many.

Minimum recommended coop would be 160 sq ft, and 400 sq ft run. I would favor making the run a lot bigger over the coop (so like 800 sq ft), as in most climates chickens would rather be outside.

Also keep in mind the additional roost space and ventilation you'll need - roughly 1 ft of roost per standard bird, and 1 sq ft of additional ventilation per bird.

I have a chicken coop and its fairly big it houses 17 hens/pullets and I just got 24 new chicks.
How big is that in feet by feet?
Dimensions and pics would help immensely here.

Any plans for how to integrate the new chicks?
Integrating early is a great way:

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!
