So in the middle of the night some random person wrote a message on my front door

You need to take some action if the disturbance is regular.

Is the crime rate high in your area or is it just kids mucking around? The timing is interesting. We are usually at our deepest sleep around 3.00am and that's a favourite time for intruders. Again on security, we have security grills at each window and door. They are decorative as well as functional to keep my wife happy. It's important to make sure that you still have easy exit from strategic points in case of fire.

I hope this resolves itself soon, especially as you are often alone. I really would start to do something about security, just in case.
It's unlikely that it's just kids messin' around, but anything's possible. Come to think of it, there have been break-in's in the last few months just a few houses from mine...one was at a house with a mom with young kids at home, and they were trying to break into her back sliding glass door with a shovel and pick while they literally stared at her through the glass door.

Having worked in the law enforcement environment for many years, I suggest you DO report it to the police. I suspect the extra presence is in response to SOMETHING reported by neighbors, and your report may add information the police could find interesting or useful. I doubt they could or would do much more than increased patrol for suspicious circumstances from your report, but if there is other activity, they'd like to know about it.

The police presence suggests that other people may have been disturbed and reported it. In your shoes, I would report it to the police too.

I don't know whether you have this where you live, but in the UK police will patrol past your home during the night as a deterrent if there's been a suspected attempt to enter. In Thailand, we can pay a monthly fee for a twice daily patrol. These arrangements are no guarantee but they show that citizens aren't just doing nothing and may deter whoever is up to no good.

Is that window vulnerable?
Yes, like most houses in here, the windows are quite vulnerable as there are no security bars, and my house has many windows.

I'm thinking the same thing, not sure why all the police cars didn't dawn on me until now as perhaps something unusual...that maybe last night there was trouble on the street, more than just writing a creepy note on the front door, or a couple of rental houses that occasionally have the law there. We have an active Neighborhood Watch program here where the police make a show and patrol off and on day and night, but of course things still happen. The area I'm in gets quick police response because, although this area is nice, it's located very nearby known trafficking areas.

I agree. I will report it tomorrow.

I would deffinitly report this to the police. No one should be outside your house at night. The police need to know. I don't know you but I care and think you need to be safe. I live out in the country now and have two dogs that let me know if something is out there. We don't usually have people just wild life.

to you, and all, and thank you, and to you all, I really appreciate all of your input and concern. You know how it is with some things until you start sounding it out with others...the more you think about it the more things click. My grown kids were none to happy to hear of it, and, from the get-go of when I discovered it, the thought of somebody actually standing there taking the time to write a creepy note on a door in the middle of the night was overshadowed by the fact the somebody was creeping at my front door.

My bedroom windows are right by my head where I sleep. I only have small indoor dogs now. I miss having large dogs.

Time to get security cameras, bars on the window, a mean dog, and a 12 gauge shotgun.

I go with that, except cameras record only that someone has been there. They don't arrest anyone.

It's odd that anyone wanting to break in would announce their presence in the area by writing on your sign.

A report to the police is important but security grills are also, I would suggest, a must. Make sure that the wouldn't impede your escape in an emergency.

Gosh I am sorry that you are having these troubles. I am a big one for security cams. They do help if a suspect has been caught in some cases. Like they can place the suspect in the area at the time when things happened. Something of that nature just went down in our tiny sleepy little town. The cops used several peoples and bussiness security cams, and thats how they ended up getting the guy. Also definately report it , you have physical evidence someone was at your front door. Mabey neighbors have also filed reports. If they get enough of them, they will take a closer look at whats going on. Good luck and I hope you are not troubled again.

All good ideas. Guards for the glass would be really great to have. I find it odd, too, that some person would be hovering at my door and then take the time to write a note. I've been trying to post from work this morning but work keeps getting in the way, lol. Marymouse, thanks. I'm glad the issue in your quiet little area was solved. The community here is similar...calm, quiet, newer and kind of private with 1 entrance in and out.
