So many losses, so many missing, upset...

I got home late tonight. I had gone by the tattoo shop after work to talk to one of my friends, and ended up staying there well after the new day rollled over. I asked my mother to do me one favor, go by and lock up the coops. (This was asked of her LONG before dark.) she said okay, she would, and that my grandpa would be there when I got home. Okay, cool. Gonna work on the truck with him tomorrow. I pulled into my driveway and down a trail of slewn body parts. Carcusses, and one very upset Blue puppy. He seemed frantic, running back and forth, barking, riling up my other two dogs. My grandpa is almost completely deaf, and was asleep on the couch, didn't hear a thing. I woke him up when I made a mad dash into the house for the .22 and a light.

The preteen coop was WIDE open. One chick was huddled in a corner, four more outside huddled against the house, and two under the coop where I can't get to them. I only found the remaints of 11 chicks, all OVER the yard... Body parts to possibly 6 more. Okay, so there's less than half of my preteens. I'm supposed to have 45 chicks in there... Where ARE they?

I thought it was Blue, and scolded him greatly, only to witness one of my barn cats running off with a half eaten, still warm chick. Culprit found, culprit dead. My other tom cat was lurking close by covered in chick bood, he's now gone, too. I'm so MAD. Most of these birds were sold, to be picked up tomorrow and Saturday. Now I have to call the buyers first thing and let them know... But I'm going to wait til daylight to see if any more chicks show up. Ugh.

I'm not blaming anyone but myself... And my mother swears she locked up ALL the coops before she left. So what happened? Where are my birds? Why did my two cats suddenly decide to eat my birds? Can Blue be a factor, even though he was visibly upset and holds these birds like royalty? Guards them with his life? He sleeps on the stoop of the preteen oop at night, and if I miss any on my nightly gatherings of chicks who couldn't make it back in, he herds them to a corner and barks until I come gather them. I'm so MADDDD. Ugh. I don't know how the cats couldve opened that door, unless it was left open. When I alled my mother, furious, she said (and I'm not arguing here) she's not at fault, I shouldve thought about the birds before I went out for the evening. Done it myself.

why did I have to go out with friends the ONE night my cats go rogue? Even if it wasn't them, or Blue, what could it have been? Heres what I found...

Four of the birds were eaten clean in half, leaving only the back half behind. Several of the birds had small bite marks and wings torn off. I found a LOT of feathers, a LOT of wings, but several bodies are null and void. All but one of the chicks (five weeks old) were already stiff. They were spread out in no particular order through out the yard. Two of the birds were where Blue was pacing, and wet like he had mouthed them.)

They were just two barn cats I feed... Not really "my" cats. They showed up around this time last year and have since then been really good mousers. They also are both second offenders. Killed chicks a few weeks ago, newly hatched chicks out of the brooder... And also some stolen from broody hens.

Yeah... no way those cats did ALL that carnage...
And WHY would they attack all of a sudden? Nah....
Something else came by and had a snack/attacked.... and the birds bled and flitted around and the hungry cats responded, maybe blue too....
Too bad the cats had to be shot instead of bringing them to a shelter to be put down humanely.

Well, I hope it wasn't my Blue boy. He's such a great protector... Up until now he's shown no interest of that kind in the birds. But, I don't think it was him because most of the birds were outside of his invisible fence... And I checked it, it's working correctly. My neighbors have a HUGE rotty that has swept throug and left a massacre like this before. The trail leads towards their place. He easily has 50lbs on the Blue pup... Idk. I'll search for more clues in the morning. Blues going to be staying inside with me tonight just in case. If it turns out to be him, I'll just make his invisafence so he can't reach the chicken coops. Not let him loose when the birds free range, etc.

My biggest fear is that the rotty got loose again. He is a mean, sneaky dog. Don't want to walk up on him defenseless and get attacked. I will post more "clues" in the morning. Hopefully I find the missing 20 some odd chicks.

I'm so sorry for what happened. Honestly, it doesn't sound like your cats or Blue are to blame, but rather something larger and far more aggressive came through, wrought havoc, and the cats just took some of the spoils.

Whoa. A couple years ago a neighbor's rott killed two of my prized roos and two VERY expensive hens that a friend had given us because he wanted chicks. We had them set up in cages so Spot and RJ (the roos) couldn't fight. Somehow the rott got past my horse, who guards the back two acres like he's a big dog, and ripped my chickens right through the fencing. He then tried to make off with half of one of the hens only to be trampled by the horse. The rott limped home with a completely destroyed right front shoulder and leg. We found out about the dog the same day as the chickens because at the time we were the only ones in the area with a horse. They had called the cops and humane society on us. We showed them what we were still cleaning up and they fined our neighbors $1000 for our losses. That didn't even cover the hens.

To be clear, the cats were only shot because they had birds and it was out of reaction more than anything. There's still catfood on the table, but fresh meat is appealing I guess. I know they stalk my younger birds, so I wasn't taking any more chances on losses. I had spent the past year trying to rehome them, with no luck... Even after they were fixed.

Also, Blue is now pacing the house whining. He keeps looking to the back door (which faces a forrest) and barking. I go check, nothing to be seen. Pace, pace, bark... Coyotes are bad this time of year. Possibility? Even though the birds were spread out down the driveway, opposite side of the property to the woods?
