So, my run stinks. literally.

2x4s work really well for roosts because they won't bend under the weight of the chickens. Plywood is weak and flexible, the birds won't like it. They won't feel secure. A 2x4 laid FLAT is what their feet like best. Chickens don't grip with their feet when they sleep like songbirds. They sleep with their feet flat.

I would aim for at least 1.5" which is the width of a 2x4 or 2x2. 1" may be too narrow.

It could. Research. Ventilation is critical. Where you locate your openings is important. You don't want drafts. Lots of info here on BYC.

And I did for 11 years. And THIS year a coyote got my BJG rooster, 4 of my seven BA hens and one BL hen. All in one day.
