We started out with a 12 chick flock of a variety of breeds. All were supposed to be girls, but we ended up with one roo. The only problem we are having with mixing breeds is that our roo is a Polish, which would be beautiful if he weren't literally hen-pecked. My girls don't like his "hair" and pluck it out so now his gorgeous head is completely bald. We are now separating him from the girls because I'm worried that it might turn ugly. I have read since that chickens sometimes don't like chickens who are too different from them. And I am finding that to be true in this case.

Read up on chicken math while planning your coop please. Trust me. If you plan on having 10 you will end up with 50. We have no idea how this miracle works but it does. Chicken math is tricky to understand until its too late and you have a ton of chickens.

from Illinois! What part of TN are you in? I grew up in west TN. I enjoy having a mixed flock, so I can tell them apart.

You'll enjoy learning from the people of BYC. They should be able to help you with any questions that you have, and they're pretty good at feeding the chicken addiction too.

lol, sounds like good advice. my husband has already realized he's in trouble, he mentioned "hundreds" while we were working on the barn/coop today. he sees the gleam in my eye

To Schmije: we are from Memphis, but now live closer to Corinth, MS, yet still in TN.

To LittleHouse: poor baby! reminds me of when I added the weather loach to my tank of guppies, except in reverse - he kept pulling out their gorgeous showy tail fins! he looked like he was riding them, it was crazy to watch.

the ppl we bought the land from were apparently using the DLM w/o the litter - there is crap 3 in thick caked up on some boards. what started out as a "we'll spend a few hours Friday cleaning this coop up, then go get the chickens Saturday" project has turned into a " I don't wanna spend no $500 on some free chickens, but all this crap has gotta go. 'well honey, if you tear out all that stuff, your gonna have to rebuild the whole barn" kinda deal, leading to a discussion on what were gonna do with our lives for the next 10 years. decision? we're gonna have chickens, lol!

LOL I just laughed SOO hard when you asked if you were too ambitous (sp?)! LOL I started with 25! hehe

Chicken math will get you every time.I went from 2-3 to ??????

Yeah I'll have to count them sometime. Have some hatches coming up so the total would change if I do it now.

I'm from the Memphis suburbs. Been away for about 11 years now, but I get back pretty often to visit family that's still there.

And our chicken math caused us to have to build a second coop.
