So sad😭

So sorry this happened! My first shipment from Meyer met a similar fate a year or so ago, but they arrived in a blizzard and it was just too cold. But Meyer made it right immediately, they sent me a replacement shipment right away. It was still very cold and three didn't make it, so they credited my credit card for those three. I connected with them through their online chat feature each time, I was a very nervous first-time chick mommy! They were very helpful and I was very satisfied with them. I wonder if they are having problems with staffing due to Covid-10 issues.... I hope you get this resolved to your satisfaction very quickly!.:hugs

They did email me and offer to either refund or replace the chicks. The problem is that they don’t have the chicks I received available anymorešŸ˜•

wow, I just saw a video tour on youtube of the inside of their hatchery today. I'm pretty appalled that this could happen :( my order is supposed to arrive from Meyer next week. I know that postal service is overloaded right now but the boxes are clearly marked! I really hope she makes it, poor thing. so sorry that happened.

Marked doesn’t matter, the box is chirping lol!
This is a terrible story.
However I just received my 3rd annual Meyer shipment and I have never had an issue yet (about 40-45 chicks worth). Sad that a bad thing happens sometimes but I think overall the risk is low. And chicks en route to tractor supply etc probably have identical fates.

I really don’t blame the hatchery at all. They were in transit too long but, in the end, day old chicks are fragile so even the most careful of handling during shipment could still have similar results.

Little Tabitha is up and roaming in the brooder (at least trying to roam). She has been trying to groom herself (unsuccessfully but, hey, she’s trying), and her head is staying upright. Her main issue now is that she really only walks backward. She can take a few steps forward, but then tumbled back. She is staying on her feet though. I have been giving her honey water via syringe and she did give a little poop this morning. I’m hoping these are all good signs. After work, I’m going to throw some spinach in my blender and make a slurry to feed her since it is a good source of both selenium and protein. I’m also going to pick up some more vitamin E.

Sorry about the chicks!!

we also had all DOA from Meyer in 2018. I’m in OH, about a 3 hour drive from Meyer, and live in city, but transit time took 3 days. However, I think the handling by PO may have been the main issue bc with 25+ chicks there was very little poop in the box leading me to believe they died earlier in transit than later (can’t tell by temp of chicks bc they were shipped with warm packs). When I arrived at the PO, they advised that the box was reallyquiet. I opened them and all dead. I refused shipment at PO, called Meyer and they refunded me right away. I’ve since had some Meyer chickens, but I picked them up in person when I was in the Cleveland area. Another chick order from a different hatchery: Ipaid for Express shipping, they arrived in 17 hours. But 3 died and a few looked a bit worn from shipping. Overall, I would pick up in person anytime you are able.

my suggestions for chicks:

see if a livestock auction near you. (We googled this and found 3 near us). Then see when they hold auctions and when small animals are sold. The auction house we use often has a few batches of chicks that people have brought to sell.

check fb for farm pages bc there may be a farm near you that sells chicks, chickens. They cannot sell on fb, but can have a farm page.

Check NPIP site. In order to ship chicks, a place needs to be NPIP.

I don't know where you are located, but I'm in OH. I click on my state and 35 pages of NPIP listings comes up. Scroll through the docs to see if any are drivable. look them up on fb, internet, or CL bc they likely have some outlet to sell their birds. The doc includes a lot of codes. These are stock codes indicating breed.

Find codes here. "R" is for regular sized chicken breeds. "W" is for Bantam sized breeds.

I am so sorry. That is just so heartbreaking to know they had to pass like that. I've ordered twice from Meyer, but I live in Pa which is right next door so I have received each order in less than 24 hours post hatch. Meyer has a REALLY GOOD policy for replacements and refunds. Please remember once the chicks leave the hatchery, it is out of their hands. It is up to the postal workers to ensure the chicks are handled safely and delivered in a timely manner. Also remember they cannot control the weather. Many parts of the country were in a cold snap and it seems to me it took three days, M-W to arrive, which four days is about the max any chick can handle. I know people have success with ordering from hatcheries that are far away, but I personally feel you should only order chicks from a hatchery that is close to you. I know others may disagree, but I want the chicks to be in transit for as little as possible.
