Well there you go...

Alot of people like to tell stories of how they shot a BB gun in a nusance animals butt and how it didnt bother them again but many times those same people will also post how they again have animal losses. Truth be told, what is being tought to the animals is the sight of a human is the problem, not the attack of a chicken. Unfortunatly, those animals have a fairly simple brain so what you are teaching the animal is when they see a human, they think pain and avoid it (meaning human) instead of the desired learned situation which is when the nusance animal sees a chicken, they should leave it alone.

My money is on fox and it wont happen again soon or regularly other than the fact that it occationally happens... well unless you stop the fox.... I have seen coon attacks with similar situations but not with such a blatent fox and coyote presence in the area.

I am sorry for your loss...

My condolences on your loss...
I would venture to say it was a bird of prey. I have a redtail in the neighbourhood who goes after a guy's racing pigeons.
Raptors are mostly likely the culprits if all you find is a pile of feathers. They pluck their food before eating it. I had to collect the remains of one of the pigeons a couple of weeks ago. All that was left was a head and a plastic bag's worth of feathers.
