So....talk about.....CANCER SUPPORT THREAD !!

I have the butterscotch sundae dog! renamed 'Sadie'
ya.gif

she is great! I found out she is much older than they said, but she is perfect for us.
When a puppy arises for the boy we will still have room.
Coyote, I will post some pictures as soon as I get the mouse/cable/input thingie and down load/cable/input thingie out of the same socket thing. (Computer jargon isn't my strength)
...also, how come when you have a camera out all you get is dog tails and winkers?

off to the store for rawhide chews. and puppy chow. and a new collar...and tennis balls... and dog bones...
It really helps one forget one's troubles when you have something to focus your energy one doesn't it?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Can't wait to see Sadie's picture!!! I am so happy that you found the one that speaks to your heart!! Me, Lurchie, and the fuzzies spent about an hour this morning just playing on the bed. Icee has really come out of her shell and is the one that initiated the playtime. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOo I'm so happy for you!!

And you are right, when the time is right, the boys dog will come along.

ETA--bring her on up to play. Got some video of my girls planing today. Cherry the Foxhound came to play as well.

I was watching the video and turned to my left and there was Sadie focused on the screen watching your dogs play! it made me laugh out loud, and i am more of a chuckle in my head sort of person.
There is a definite difference in how Katie plays with Icee and how she plays with Cherry.
Kate is a good dog.

I kept looking at this new dog, even at the humane society, and thinking,"I have seen you before, You remind me of a dog I knew." But it took me until late last night when the light was just right and I saw the ridge down her back. Then out with the dog book. She is definitely more Rhodesian ridge back-sans the ridge- than anything else.
My grandparent's neighbor had one when I was in third grade. No wonder I had such a difficult time putting my finger on it. Long ago, far away and all of that...and it wasn't my dog either.

She is fitting in well for a dog who has spent her young life in a kennel. One thing I can say for our humane society, they have loping room. no little narrow run for these dogs, they get group play time too. When you get them they are dog socialized.

Now, Miss Coyote, I do have a doggie issue I need your help on, maybe it will clear up with age, but this dog wolfs its food. I mean super vacuum. Dyson has nothing on this dog. Dog snacks, milk bones, kibble, gone before the bowl is square on the floor. How do I get her to slow down?
I got her some raw hides to work on when she started on the rocking chair runner, and she knows what to do with them, but it is rapid fire gnawing, like she must consume it before it disappears. I can not imagine how difficult it must be to be in doggie prison for the majority of one's young life, but she isn't in prison anymore. Will this go away? will she relax and enjoy her food? I always got lost or abandoned dogs. They were not on their own long before we took them in. I have never sprung a dog before.

Contrats on your new dog !! Hope it all works out for you and her. Can't wait to see a pic!

I got the Spring "I can't get enough plants" itch. I have a bunch of seedlings started - parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme and dill (for the butterflies) Also started some stock, forget-me-nots, cleome, blue salvia, zinnia, sweet peas, hollyhock and heavenly blue morning glory. I think I should clean out my greenhouse so they have a place to go when it's time.

Does she eat alone or is she with other critters? If she's alone and still snarfs like that - it's a habit of hers to get what she can before 'anyone else gets it'. Maybe give her just some of her food and sit with her while she eats, then pat her 'good dog' and give her a little more etc. until she feels comfortable with her food? Just a suggestion..........

I had a rescue dog that would chew stuff when we were all in bed sleeping

Luna chick on your reply #1659 when you said your fingers turned white and ached is excatly how mine react to the cold. I had breast cancer almost 3 yrs ago. Did the chemo (no radiation)Thankd God, had a dbl mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. It is very uncomfortable when my fingers go numb. It's called renauds syndrome (hope I spelled it right). Any way I'm glad you are doing well. Our attitude is what gets us through this dreadful time in our lives.

Find a couple of palm sized smooth rocks and put them in her food bowl. That will make her slow down. Some people even use muffin tins. They make bowls that have nobbies, bumps and things in them that they have to try to get their kibble out around. I used one of these for Katie. http://www.dog.com/item/busy-buddy-kibble-nibble-dog-toy/494496/ there are little rubber thingies on the inside, you can cut them to help your sized kibble fall out. They are also fun for treats. Katie is a chewer, so was Spook up until about a year old. I use Kong stuffed with something good. Icee chewed even the big black super Kong to pieces. I use beef leg bones stuffed with goodies for her. I've had the same 2 beef bones for 10 years. I just toss them in some boiling water every now and then to clean them up. We also use cow holves and bully sticks (beef tendon dried) I'm not big on raw hides, sometimes they can bite off big chuncks. I do use ground raw hide sticks now and then.

It will get better! She is just nervous and trying to adjust to her new surroundings. Katie wasn't socialized while in "lock up" You make her feel safe and secure and she is just going to blossom in to an awesome dog!!

She goes into the crate at night.
I will try the slow feed method. she takes food from our fingers without taking our fingers... maybe if I took the time to hand feed her she'll do better. I keep Sadie separate from the girls when I feed them. Sadie is a growler. The other two have respect for each other and just don't care who is near their bowls. But I really do not know what this dog came from, so we feed them in separate rooms.

I will try to get some pics up today. My computer kid might loan me his mouse... or, I bet i could do it on his computer!

duh. the dementia has started. I used to be much quicker than this. I was really pretty bright before child birth. I think I lost my brain with the placenta.

Hi flowergirl! Another survivor with a great attitude! I'm sure the chemo had something to do with my fingers. I'm going to look that up to get more info - thanks!

I'm glad you are doing well too. One of these days I'd like to look back after 3 yrs and be glad......meanwhile I'm too new of a patient so I don't have that "ah, glad I got that behind" feeling yet.

This was years ago when people didn't have dog crates.

I also spoil my pets, when we got our girl 15 years ago, we got a crate and she went in every night. That only lasted a week - One night I went down to check on her and brought her outside to pee and proceeded up the stairs and put her on our bed. that was the end of the crate.
