I just received 10 ducklings from Murray McMurray Hatchery just 2 days ago (my first ducklings ever!): 3 Khakis, 3 Cayugas, 2 Buffs, and 2 Blue Runners. Of the 10 ducklings, the Cayugas seem the most wild, wild as in not liking to be touched or even near my hand. If I pick them up they actually nibble me, if they were bigger it might hurt. The runners are the nicest, not even afraid of my hand... The 2 buffs have very different personalities, one of them is timid but stares up at me sort of sweetly while the other seems to be establishing herself as the little leader of the flock already (she also nibbles me). The 3 khakis are a little timid but I think I can win them over with some work.
Luckily, I only plan on keeping 6, and I already know that 2 of the Cayugas will be going (I want to keep one for some diversity). It's a shame too because I really wanted to like them... or rather them to like me. Oh well...
Just beautiful! I love duck pictures!
I hope that I was lucky when picking my ducklings and I got one of each. One of their beaks is lighter than the other. Could this mean anything as far as male and female?
That might mean it is a drake but that being said Cayugas are suppose to have black bills and feet. For my ducks I don't keep any ducklings showing color.
Also are the drakes of cayuga or muscovies aggressive? I have found that muscovy drakes are much more aggressive than there mallard derived counter parts. I often see the muscovy drakes beating on eachother and the Cayugas will once in a while a older drake will put the run on a young on but it isn't too bad.
Here are my 2 new babies!
I guess girls won't get the beautiful green like the drakes do? Also, one has a spot of yellow under the bill and lighter chest, the other has just a 'tinge' of yellow on the chest. Do they grow out of this or will they turn white? I was really hoping for dark shiny green duckies.
i have 2 full grown male cayuga and 2 3week old ducklings. they are no trouble at all, they have a plastic paddling pool which they would rather drink out of than swim in. they do eat my plants if they get chance. they live in the front garden all day and i carry them into there hutch round the back at night.. i am hoping at least one of the young ones is a girl. then i,ll need another girl for the other male.. has anyone in huddersfield. west yorkshire got any females for sale
at what age do they get the full curl on the tail mine are about 4 months old, both have raspy quack and a slight curl on top of tail but not a full curl . think they are both boys just not got the full curl feathers
So I am still not certain about the Cayuga's eating. I have two that are four months old. They are going through the feed that we give them pretty fast. Do they normally eat a lot of feed? It just seemed a little piggy to me,
Thanks for the pictures they are gorgeous. I have just hatched four ducks,.two part cayugas under a chicken mom. They are four weeks old yesterday and I sure hope they look like yours when they mature.
