So the 250lb dead deer refuses to load itself.....

Yep, antler restrictions in PA are at least three points on a single antler. One thing I don't like about the rule is that around where we hunt (my own experience), there are many spikes that remain spikes and thats it. With the restriction, the only way we can get those spikes out of the gene pool is: if they die of old age, get hit by a car, or a junior hunter kills them.

Thats just a real bad rule, spike breed more spikes........bucks as yearling can have many points , and with age they gain more mast.

Whitetail bucks can be 8, 10,12 or more points at a year old, its the genes. spread and size comes with age.

Now they still need proper food ,for good antler growth.

PA'S DNR need to check with some deer breeders,

Deer points has little to due with age, on some deer farms, you can check the antlers from a buck , in most case each year the point number stay about the same , just get more size each year, until about 6 years,

Wow! Those are so thick!

Really not thick (in velvet), but look at number of points for their first antlers....Reason PA need to drop their rule on number of points rule....they are just letting those with gene of spike to past on to their sons. All these bucks are only a year old , but carry gene to produce large number of points.

Now bucks will add a few points as they age, but a deer 1 1/2 year old as a spike(unless because of bad diet) will never get to have many points.

LOL, I know the people that own that farm.

I wont consider culling a buck until he is 2 1/2 here. A first year spike, or 4 point here is very common due to nutrition, however by his 2nd set of horns we can judge how he is progressing.

"Is she breathing?"
"No, he died when I shot him." (Get it? Because the operator doesn't know if it's a male or female?!)

This reminds me of something that actually DID happen to my husband. A deer got hit by the car in front of him and it kept going. Its back was broken, so the front was kicking but it wasn't dead. Hubby called highway patrol to come finish it off and he would take the body for us. The trooper comes, gets out and looks at,the deer in the ditch and says "is that the deer?" Ummm....yeah....
Then the idiot puts four slugs in the abdomen. Poor deer, plus ruined all the good cuts!
Is that the deer? Sheesh.

And yes, we northerners grow em big!

After having the authorities refuse to come out to put down a hit deer, my DH just slits their throat if he sees one that isn't dead (since he doesn't carry a gun in his truck).

Yeah...country people, we are.

ANTLERS!! ANTLERS!! not horns! Goats have horns, deer have antlers. Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.

THANK YOU!!! I HATE THAT TOO! The difference between horns and antlers is; horns are not shed, they continue to grow with the animal through out it's life time. Antlers are shed every year and have to regrow for the next breeding season.

A 250 Pounder would be really huge.. I pulled a 232 pounder (field dressed) out of the swamp once and that was a chore and a half with 2 people!
