So the 250lb dead deer refuses to load itself.....

I have WHAT in my yard? :

I don't think its because they are lazy. I think it is because they are squeamish.

Too few of us are willing to face what eating meat means. I think it is part of the circle of life and the hunter thanks the deer for his life and for feeding us. He hunts spiritually and responsibly and nothing is wasted. It beats the deer losing a battle with a car and being left on the side of the highway.

This would be my guess. Also beats starving to death. Georgia had to up its limits to get the population somewhere near under control.

Thanks for the hilarious story!

Well....if you don't own a gun, or hunting clothes, or have a place TO hunt, it's going to cost you quite a bit of money just to get set up. Granted, you might be able to pick up a cheap rifle at the pawn shop, get by with the bare minimum of blaze orange and maybe find a farmer who will let you sit behind a haybale - but a good number of folks wouldn't even know where to start with that.

I also have personally known people who can't tell the difference between a cow and a deer, much less a buck and a doe.

There are some people who either can't hunt - or just shouldn't.

Sad but true for us too. I have seen people have the nerve to randomly put up a deer stand in my horse pastures despite "No Hunting" signs. A couple years ago somebody shot a Haflinger down the road with an arrow. The poor horse didn't make it. I go through the same fear every year. No hunting season goes by without me having to report people for trespassing and hunting. Then we always find dozens of dead deer that have arrows sticking out of the most terrible places and that ended up taking days to die. It is just sad.

Most people should support deer hunting............more people are kill by deer ,than any other north america animal. snakes, bear, bison,. and etc, none come near, one of my good friend was killed when he hit one with his bike.

Numbers of deer need control, here in Ohio you can take 3 but only one buck, also with other permit up to 6. Myself I only take one, thats all the meat i need , and its illegal to sell the meat.

We had a sick Belted Galloway cow, we tried everything to save her. She died anyhow and was probably 350 pounds when she died (she was just a calf still)

Anyhow, my neighbors were gone for the evening, so my husband and I tried to load her in the truck ourselves. We could NOT lift her onto the tailgate, and he was threatening to go get the chainsaw and cut her to bits. UGH! We were raising her for food, but after nursing her for MONTHS due to a long term illness, it broke my heart to think of mutilating her.

We finally pulled two fence posts together and tried to use it as a ramp to pull her into the cab. But they were big round fence posts and they kept rolling away and she'd drop down the middle. At the time, the whole thing was mortifying. But when I think back, I wish someone had videotaped it. It must have been worse than Laurel and Hardy watching us try to move this poor dead cow. We did eventually get her into the truck. We had to shove her up a few inches, brace her, stop and take a breath and do it again. We should have tried to get our car jack underneath her!

Great story. Thanks for the laugh. Here in NY My brother took an 8 pointer that dressed out at 210lbs. It was weighed and he won the big buck contest that year. The kicker is he shot it out of my tree stand. This deer was eating well from the horse feed from the horse farm that abutted the property. Lets hope this thread doesn't get out of control with anti hunters opinions.

I know alot of those in southern states, may find it hard to believe , but 200 lbs buck are common ,yes even 250 lbs.

I would love to seen , the two of you loading that buck.

Cassidy what you did is similar to what we ended up doing. We used some boards from my woodpile to make a ramp and then inched him on up.

The hunter called the buck was 190lbs field dressed. When we loaded him nothing had been done to him at all..... So we're guessing quite a few more pounds!

We have had issues with hunters too, one night I came home to find some random guy sitting in the tree stand put up by the guy we had the agreement with. Since this was visible from the house I was stunned at his gall. He simply thought that since there was a stand there we would be OK with his hunting from it. Um, no.

A few days later we found a dying deer right over the property line in our neighbors land. Dh called them and they were horrified. Very new to the country the wife wanted to call a vet. Luckily for the deer her husband dissuaded her and let DH dispatch it humanely. But, it had been gut shot and dying for a while so DH was afraid to eat it. The land owner decided to run a grand experiment and just let it lie there to see how long it took mother nature to take care of the problem. I had mixed feelings about this but...

It did not take long at all! It was down to skin and skeleton in a matter of days. Waste not want not.
