No more Bantam Roosters for me!

I had a bantam roo that was psychotic. I do'ot want any more bantam roos.

Ok... maybe I am being hard on him, because we could hold him and snuggle him, he was no doubt tame. But very territorial. He and my rooster Rusty crowed all day long at each other, and they would have taken each other out given the chance. I could only take so much of Roy's screeching crow!

With Roy gone, it is amazing as to how much less crowing I hear. At first it was eerie quiet.

I think Rusty was resting his vocal chords or whatever they have.

Delawares!

The ones I hatched from day one, were aggressive and mean. My kids soon started calling them the devil Delawares and that is the reputation that they have in my house now. Every time I'd reach into the brooder to feed the little buggers, they'd peck my hand to death. OUCH! Never again!

This is a very interesting thread.

I hated my Dominique roo, he was very, very aggressive. But the hens are darlings.

I have very limited experience, as this is my first year.
but here is my short list

black austrolorp - a bit standoffish,but nice easygoing- loudest of my chickens and probably not for town living.

buff orps - absolutely love mine!

barred rock - standoffish, but shyly friendly

EE's - flighty, don't want petted - small eggs

I definitely cannot stand my 2 RIR roos, they are soooo mean, to each other, and everyone else in the pen. The other day, I bent over to give a treat to one of my pullets and my shirt lifted up a bit and one (his name is pecker and for a good reason), grabbed on to my back and would not let go. The 2 I have attack each other all day long. I am so sick of the fighting. I also have a Black tailed Japanese bantam, she is laying already, very tiny eggs, but she is always very skittish.

I absolutely love my RIR's & BR's.

The 2 breeds that I have had that I'll never have again are Silkies, because they don't fare well in a red clay enviroment, and are a little too docile, and Buff Minorcas.

My Buff Minorca is twice as flighty as any leghorn, goes off at the slightest thing, and I have to pull her aside every few days and feed her to make sure she is getting enough to eat. I mean I do love her, and she'll have a home with me until she dies of old age, but I won't get anymore.

New Hampshire Reds. (some offshoot of RIR I think - don't know the full breeding thing on them).
The roosters are so agressive they will attack dead things!!
I had one try to attack my donkeys and my cow!!! This roo was psycho.

Now, I have one NHR hen who is ok - not very pretty, IMO, but she is a good broody and a fantastic mama when she hatches babies. She is not aggressive like the roos were (unless she is sitting on eggs

then she'll take your hand off if ya get too close.)

I love my games, bantam and standard - never really had an agression problem with them. The bantam roos do like to crow a lot though.

The Black Australorp hens are piggies - but in an adorable way. They will come right up on the porch if I am taking too long getting their treats for them.

Easter Eggers - I could probably do without. I have one hen, nice girl, but she takes a LONG time to lay her egg - I'm afraid I may have egg binding issues with her further down the road. Not overly friendly, but nice enough if you don't want a lap chicken. The roos I had were a mixed bag, one or two were very sweet, one or two were a bit aggressive - I guess it depends on what their mix is in becoming easter eggers.

I have one leghorn hen - she is a bit of a snot. Never wants you anywhere near her, and she is always wandering off by herself. I would get rid of her if she weren't my main roo's favorite hen. She acts like you are going to kill her anytime ya come near.

I have one red sex link hen who is pretty sweet. She is also a bit of a piggy.
