Soap Makers Help!

Quote:
My recipe is 32% and I super fat at 10% too....and discount my lye big time. My recipe does not run thru the lye calculator...it puts me at 100 grams MORE lye than I am using.

But it is tried and true and I have a tough time breaking the routine!! I'd love for you to share your recipe with me...as long as it is not a 'family secret' of course.

Just made Frankinsense and Myrrh and a lovely Sweet Earth (patchouli, vanilla, and lavender)....I'm looking forward to the latter.

NP I'd help out if I were closer on the swap! If there is anything I could do to help you coordinate...pm me. I'll call my other soaping buddies to see if they want to participate.

HAD TO EDIT THIS....I use LESS lye than the calculator calls for...over 100 grams less actually!

It is very drying...I'd discount my coconut oil if I didn't LOVE my lather so much. Plus I'm oily skin type...so I prefer it and coconut does not affect me.

Pine Tar soap is great for eczema...and psoriasis....as is all lye based soap...because of the glycerin. I'm getting ready to make my pine tar...just waiting on my pine tar supplier to verify their pine tar is kiln burnt and safe for human use. You can purchase pine tar at the feed store....they use it for horses hoof/feet care. I'm going to pair with eucalyptus to 'try' and mask the scent. I'll post my process when I try it out...this will be a first with pine tar. So I'm open to suggestions!!

How do you know when your soap is done curing? I went by a recipe for my first one and it said how long to cure but when I start doing more I would really like to know about how many weeks I should give them. Or what a rule of thumb is about the curing time. Like if the batch is a certain size or thickness or something. Thanks.

I try to give mine 4 - 6 weeks. Most are ready in 3-4 weeks.

You can touch it to your tongue and taste for the lye burn

If it burns its not cured.

I test all my batches with the tongue test. The ones I usually tongue test are my end pieces that I roll into a ball for MYSELF. You'll feel a zap on your tongue...actually TRY a fresh commercial bar tongue test and you'll be surprised that actually cold process soap is better because the ingredients you use in the bar are food grade quality. The zap from commercial soap is much stronger...
