Soap Makers Help!

Mine were hard plastic jello molds......I think I will let Nanakat answer this one because some have had molds melt & I'm sure it has to do with the heating up of the recipe. Honey, milk & Fragrance oils will make it heat up.

Got it.... How long does a pound last, or better phrased how much will a pound make?

A pound of soap (oil, water, lye) will make four 4 oz bars. The ones I gave you today are about 4 oz.

I could be sarching for an answer that varies but..... How much lye is in a pound of soap?

I have a friend that is very good with wood & have the one I want to make saved but since he was so much help when we built our house I thought I should give him a break before I start pestering him about making it.

I also have a large supply of soap even after giving alot way at Christmas. I love using a 3" PVC pipe & a pingles can. I also found some plasic tray things at walmart that work pretty good for now. I just want a better mold for when I am giving it as gifts.

As a mold?

Be sure to line the PVC with freezer paper....the soap will come out much easier than vaseline or plastic. You will need a cap to end the pipe so it will stand up. When the soap sets, slide out the paper encased soap, unroll it and cut it. The the soap will need to air out to cure. I line a pgarden center tray with freezer paper and set the soap on it and slide it under the bed for about 4 weeks. Makes the room smell great!

How you getting the pretty edges?

Its a cutter thing that I got that has a rippled edge, it was something that I got to hang on the wall but now it does both.......I will have to take a pic or find one to show you.

That depends on your recipe. The amount of lye is based on the oils used in the soap...each oil has a different saponification number because some oils are solid and some are liquid.... I have some recipes for the soaps I gave you that I will share as well as a basic soap recipe.

Wow... How long does soap need to set up? Before it is usable?

Some of these question have got to seem funny... Some things I do really good with simple instruction, others I have to have the visual hands on...Blonde by nature!

Do you have a link to the soap calcualtor so she can play with it & see.

I can't remember how many ounces are in the bottle of Lye but I get two recipes with alittle left over.....

I was mainly trying to figure out if 1 lb of lye is enough to last a while or if its better to just grab the 2 lbs.

Some soap recipes heat up very hot...I would stick to a glass pan for your first batch or silicone molds instead of rubber set on a cookie sheet .
NEVER use anything aluminum....it melts (eatten by the lye)
An old wooden drawer lined with plastic or freezer paper works great too and is a better insulator.
