Soaping Recipe Swap

No problem!

I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what you were talking about when I realized that Bird Brain is also a BB.

My husband also gets to hear all of my soap musings. Thankfully, he really likes the soaps and is supportive of the project. He even helped me soap the Almond batch.

Of course, after cleaning up, I could NOT find my digital scale despite looking everywhere. My DEAR husband even went through the garbage can to make sure it didn't get thrown out along with some boxes.

Of course, I found it 'hidden' right where it should be in my soaping box, but covered by a lid.

This is a simple recipe that I started with till I felt more comfy with soaping.

Chiknwhisperer,
Here in the recipe for the shampoo bar I sent you.

I read somewhere about someone who had made a shampoo bar by looking at the conditioning qualities of various oils and choosing the most conditioning oils. So I made up my recipe using SoapCalc and came up with the following recipe. I tend discount my water pretty sharply, so this recipe is discounted at 25%. It is superfatted at 5%.

Birdbrain’s Shampoo Bar

Avacado 5 oz.
Sweet Almond 6 oz.
Castor oil 6 oz.
Coconut oil 10 oz
Olive 8 oz.
Lard 6 oz.
Grapeseed 8 oz
Cocoa Butter 5 oz.
Shea butter 2Tablespoons (not included in the lye calculation)

¼ teaspoon Green Chromium Oxide
---Mix the green into the oils or the lye using your stick blender.
13.5 oz water
Lye 7.367 oz

So, that is recipe I designed. I had a few distractions while I was making it and ended up putting a bit more of a few of the oils than I had planned. I wrote them down as I made my mistakes and reran it through the lye calculator and it was still okay with the lye measurement, so I went with it.

Here is what I ended up adding more of: Avacado was 5.25 oz, Almond was 6.3 and Olive was 8.3. So you can see I got a bit heavy handed with 3 of the oils.

It worked out okay though and I am going to make some more soon.

Thanks for the recipe. I'll have to try it as soon as I get my lye. I ran out last night and DH had kept telling me to wait on ordering it. So last night I told him I was ordering it this morning no matter what. I got 16# so I hope that will last longer lol. I think I have gotten to the point where I have out grown buying 8#.

If you check out the soap makers thread, there is a lot of info there to get you started. I also started a soapmakers reference thread and there are links for sites that will give you step by step instructions. Good luck!
