Soft, Rubbery Egg, No Shell; What Does It Mean?

Whenever I see these types of eggs in my coop, I always put out a bowl of oyster shells for the hens. We call them “Rubber Eggs” and they are usually caused by a lack of calcium in the hens diet.

You can try and help your hens by putting oyster shells in their coop for extra calcium!

OK. Thank you. I knew that, but I was depending on the egg laying chicken feed that says it has oyster shell? Maybe there isn't enough in that fee? I've also been putting their own egg shells back into their vicinity. Maybe I should just mix it in. At any rate, I'm certainly going to get some more oyster shell for them.

Either it means a one-time glitch because chickens do that sometimes.

Or it means you have a chicken that needs a lot more calcium in her diet.

I would provide a dish of oyster shell, as others suggested, because that will do no harm and might help. Then watch whether you get any more soft eggs.

If this is the only soft egg you have seen, and all your other eggs have nice shells, this is probably just a one-off and not anything to worry about.

You added a post while I was typing

Since they are eating layer feed, and have egg shells sometimes as well, they probably do have enough calcium. A dish of oyster shell might still give you peace of mind.

I would not mix the eggshell into the feed, just leave it separate for the hens to choose how much they want.
