I'm 12 years into a 44 panel, 2 converter, rooftop mounted, on-grid solar system. So far, two converters have died, both completely replaced under warranty, and not a single panel has died.
It hasn't eliminated my power bill (our farm and winery eat a lot of power) but has reduced the bill by about 75%, and is probably right about now getting into the "paid for itself" range.
