I had been looking on craigslist for some bronze turkeys, well I found some so I emailed the guy and we decided I "MIGHT" get them today or tomorrow. So I nicely emailed him this to let him know I wasn't going to be able to make it either day......

I just wanted to let you know I can not make it tomorrow or Saturday, I am still very interested if you are willing to hold them, I could send a deposit if you want?
Thank you so much!

And I get this lovely email back!

VERY UNFORTUNATE!!! Now, I have told everyone they are sold! I’ll have to re-advertise now and start the whole process over again!!!!!

I did feel bad I couldn't get them today or tomorrow, before I got that lovely reply, now I feel like an awful person! That just ruined my whole day!

Oh well I guess. I just wanted to share.

I'm not gonna make you feel any better. When I deal with people and am asked to hold something for them, I do so based on good faith. I do not sell anything I don't need or want to get rid of quickly. I have been frustrated many times by lookie loos who say one thing and do another. I know you're heart was in the right place, but by not showing up you have become a lookie loo and a waste of time. Next time either send a deposit upfront of stick to the original plan. I have been on both sides of this and it seems to keep all parties happy.

Technically he was the one being unreasonable. Sure, you couldnt get them on the days he wanted them gone but you still wanted them and offered a deposit. So really he just blew things out of the water rather than being understanding. Jerk.

Um, I so absolutely no reason you should feel bad about this. You offered to even send the guy a deposit. He's just being a jerk. You certainly didn't do anything wrong. I'd just forget about and move on. People can be a real trip some times.

Since you offered to send a deposit, I think the seller was being unreasonable. If you would have just asked that he hold them, I would have understood the response. I have had poultry advertised as give away before and had people tell me that they will be here tomorrow and just not show up, that does make me mad. I think maybe the seller has been stuck too many times and just saw the part that you couldn't make it...

I have to disagree and I don't mean any ill will by the following.

You have to understand that anyone who sells a lot of items on Craigslist deals with a lot of flakes. If I buy something off of craigslist I set a specific time and place, and I make it. Period. The guy isn't a retail outlet. Don't expect service with a smile. He is selling something he wants to get rid of today.

The issue began with your wishy-washyness. Set a time and date and stick to it. you said that "you might pick it up today or tomorrow", effectively committing to the sale. You didn't say that you might not pick them up at all, or at any later date.

Commit or don't. You were somewhere in between, you didn't meet your end of the bargain, you possibly made him change his schedule and added more work to his day. Understand?

Hopefully you get the turkeys, but you need to put your feelings aside. This is a business transaction.

I agree 100% with jasonm11 and Dogfish. You sound wishy washy. Even offering to send him a deposit (now he would have to wait EVEN longer for that) does not sound like a committment based on you not being able to meet on either of those days. If you deal a lot with people on Craigslist like many of us do (from both sides - seller and buyer), you have to realize that so many people say that they are going to do something and then "something" happens and the transaction doesn't happen. This has happened to me in my FREECYCLE group and on Craigslist when I give away FREE stuff. When I post that I have something FREE, I want it GONE ASAP. People promise to pick it up but then email you and say "something came up and can they get it another day". My answer is NO. I move on to the next person. That ticks me off when people do that to me.

Many times I have to re-arrange my schedule (trying to be nice and accomodating) to work with this person as far as meeting them to pick up the time.

It sounds like other people contacted him and he told them that the turkeys were sold (based on you saying that you "MIGHT" get them today or tomorrow). To him, the turkeys were SOLD to you. He missed out on a sale because there possibly was a customer who could possibly have picked up those turkeys on those days that you told him that you MIGHT get them. Sure, things happen but this is all about business. It's not personal and please don't take it that way.

So now he has to log back into his Craigslist account and create ANOTHER ad because he deleted the initial Craigslist ad. This is taking up MORE of his time. It's embarassing and now people think that HE (the seller) is wishy washy and it's not even his fault. Well, at least I would think that he was wishy washy.

Sorry to sound so harsh but that's my opinion and that is how I look at it. Just me 2 cents, so it doesn't mean anything.

Honestly, I'd have Flake Filed you for that and refused to deal with you anymore. And I probably would have let others in the poultry community know that you reneged on a deal. I don't have time for this sort of nonsense and neither do my poultry friends. In my experience, once someone cancels a pickup with no reschedule immediately offered the odds that they will show up in the future is ZERO. And frankly, even with an immediate reschedule, the odds aren't good.

I don't think you quite understand etiquette if you thought he was rude.

He put the turkeys up for sale, you contacted him and made arrangements. Vague though they were, and the use of "MIGHT" doesn't really give you an escape clause, you were committing to buy his turkeys. In other words, he has a turkeys to sell, you were offering two days that you thought you could pick them up. Then you canceled on him. Now he's left scrambling to recontact folks he'd turned down to protect your purchase and yes, that's quite a bit of work.

He committed to you, you failed on your end to meet that commitment to him. He has every right to voice his displeasure in that and explain how your actions have affected him negatively.
