She is 8 and the iPod was my old one, a gift for her Bday. We live in a very, very poor, rural area and the teacher whose class it happened in excuse was that the "poor kids around her see fancy things and want them" It was DD's fault for bringing it after she was told not to. The little girl who took it (was seen by four other kids) still makes comments about it to DD.
The teacher asked the parents and they denied it, after I saw the mother wearing it walking down the street! But, it was DD's fault, that's why we won't be replacing it.
In your case, I would probably replace it. Do they have a wrist strap type thing, or a place to insert a homemade one, I wonder? If you do get him a new one, let me know and I'd LOVE to knit and send on a cozy with a strap for him to keep it in when he takes it places.

The feeling of being stolen from is just an awful thing and maybe if he had a little holder for it, he and you would feel more secure
