It may interest you all to know that in Europe dogs routinely accompany their owners into restaurants and grocery stores. And I am old enough to remember when there was often a resident dog or cat behind the counter in the grocery store. Nobody died. And if you stop to think about it, how can the dog contaminate anything? Assuming it is well behaved and not marking. What horrendous disease is it going to disseminate by simply passing through?

Of course I forgot to mention that in Europe the dogs are well trained and well behaved.

I doubt that the dog was pooping everywhere, so it's not really a good comparison. If a grocery store would allow me to bring my little dog inside, that would be the only one I shopped at. BTW I don't bring my dog to the store with me because I know that he isn't allowed.

Now if we could just outlaw bratty kids in stores and people that block the aisles, that would be nice.

My Dh is right there with you. We were at Wal-Mart a couple weeks back and the man in front of us turned to go down the aisle when he stopped, blocking the whole aisle sideways talking on his cell phone, leaning on an empty cart.

Now, my DH is NOT afraid of confrontation. So he said - very loudly - Why don't you get off the ***** cell phone and get out of people's way?. The man did just that! In fact, he gave a quite a wide path to walk down. Now, was it the nicest thing to do? probably not. But you know what, some people act like they are the only ones on this planet. How rude is it to just park yourself crossways so no one can come or go down a particular aisle??

And that is the whole argument in a nut shell. If people would train their dogs and expect them to behave then taking the animals places wouldn't be a problem. But as you will always see, the people who feel intitled to break the law and bring little ankle biter into the grocery store are the same folks who won't clean up after or discipline said ankle biter. They think it's the cutest thing in the wordl when it barks and spins and causes total chaos whereever it goes. And how dare anyone say anything about it!

I'd venture to guess the large percent of these same people have bratty kids who never mind and throw all out fits in the middle of the store, too.

Not ALL dogs over there are well behaved. If you look at one show with the English lady that takes care of problem dogs, you can see there are some out there but they are smart enough NOT to take their dogs to public places.

Anyway, I think the stores have a right to say No to NON service dogs due to liabliity.

Having worked in several food processing plants in my younger days, dogs near the deli is the last thing I'd be worried about. I love my dogs, but would never take them into a store. However, I think we have WAAAAAAAY too many laws and rules. I'm really for a little more live and let live. I would never turn someone in for something so harmless as a dog in the store. Life is way too short.

See that bothers me to think that people bring dogs into hotel rooms where they aren't allowed. How do you know that the next person who stays in that room isn't allergic to dogs and is staying at that hotel knowing that dogs aren't allowed? As a parent who has stayed by my child's bedside in the hospital half a dozen times now as a result of allergies, I think that bringing your dog into a place like a hotel where it isn't supposed to be is selfish.

I'm selfish. Done the same in the past. Will do it again if I have to.
Dog usually stays in its crate. Anything it touches will be either washed or vacuumed. BTW, many times I have asked for and been given special permission for my small dog in a No Pets motel. You would have no way of knowing if the dog had been there. Plus a guest may have dog or cat hair on their clothes so even if they do not have the dog with them they may still deposit pet dander in the room. If your kid is all that allergic, you need to carry some sort of antidote with you for his/her safety.

That is why the maids vacuum and clean the room between guests.
