Someone explain pathological liars to me...

teehee.. i have a relative that already knows anything you tell her. I mean ANYthing. You could say, "my strawberries didn't produce well this year because we got too much rain in Washington." Even though she lives ion the east coast, has never been to Washington state, and has never grown strawberries or anything else for that matter, her response will be, "yeah I know. nobody's strawberries did well up there this year."

I also have an uncle who wants you to know that he knows everything and everyone else is stupid. Do you remember a couple of years ago when a guy in minor league baseball got accidentally killed when a ball hit him in the head? At the time, I said, "wow! That's crazy! I bet that has to be one of the only times that's ever happened." My uncle said, "no way! It happens all the time. Very common. Several times per year in the major leagues alone." So, I went and looked it up and in 106 years of major league baseball, exactly ONE person has died from a ball to the head. One person in 106 years. But my uncle just made up that statistic on the spot to make sure I knew that I said something silly and I was clueless.

Many people have personality issues and who knows why they have them! Sometimes they can be funny... sometimes not. Sounds like smoking and drinking coffee to "stay thin" throughout pregnancies could be a major contributor to me...

Oh yes, 99.657% of people have personality issues. I did that study myself.

When I was a kid I used to tell tall tales to my friends to impress them.My real life was just too boring. Now I just talk about real stuff and bore everyone to death. When my wife can't get t sleep I just talk to her for a while. Works like a charm.

Does a pathalogical liar believe their own lies or do they remember the incident the way their story goes? Or do they know they will be caught in their lie and just not care?

What is the Difference Between a Pathological, a Compulsive, a Chronic, and a Habitual Liar?

Pathological Liar

A pathological liar is usually defined as someone who lies incessantly to get their way and does so with little concern for others. Pathological lying is often viewed as coping mechanism developed in early childhood and it is often associated with some other type of mental health disorder. A pathological liar is often goal-oriented (i.e., lying is focused - it is done to get one's way). Pathological liars have little regard or respect for the rights and feelings of others. A pathological liar often comes across as being manipulative, cunning and self-centered.


Compulsive Liar

A compulsive liar is defined as someone who lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative and cunning (see, Pathological Liar), rather they simply lie out of habit - an automatic response which is hard to break and one that takes its toll on a relationship (see, how to cope with a compulsive liar).


The terms Habitual Liar and Chronic Liar are often used to refer to a Compulsive Liar.

I was married to a compulsive liar~he would tell a lie when the truth would sound better!
