Someone PLEASE talk to me about electric fence and kids!!!

Like the other posters I have been zapped more than once both a child and as an adult. My sons learned when they were very small not to touch the fence. I think I would rather they get zapped by the fence than to get in with a large animal.

Thanks guys, as always you're all great!

We've decided to do two strands of polytape on the two sides and back of the paddock which is primarily surrounded by thick weeds and no one really goes, and on the front we did wire fence with one strand of poly tape at the top, way out of the toddler's reach!
I think this is a good compromise for us and it will work. At her old hom she was only kept in pasture with welded wire and t-posts and she respected that fence.

Just this old rooster's opinion but isn't great how everyone can offer their advice and experiences and help us resolve our problems. Now if we could get Congress to join BYC I'm sure we could straighten them out as well.

At the place I board Rhett at all the fencing is electric tape. I dont get shocked that often anymore. Well I had to ask her to put a gate in so that I didnt have to climb through and duck under it on my many trips back and forth to his stall/paddock.
Luckily he respects fencing. My Appy mare would walk right through anything. I swear she could tell when the electric fence was down.

AS has been said it will not hurt your kids... Scare them... YOU BET! Also all chargers are now PULSING chargers. So even if they GRAB the wire they will get one hit let go and scream.

And to the guy that said you cant get shocked by peeing on a fence... your wrong. Done it myself when i was a kid..... THAT HURT! I never did that again...

But I have also played the grab the city kid and grab the hot wire game too....

I remember (with great joy) my older obnoxious brother spitting on the neighbors electric fence and he had one of those spits that made a string back to his lip. Shocked him nicely! It didn't hurt him much but it was sure funny.
