thanks, it helped. the way people talked it sounded like if left to grow, the birds would eventually get so obese etc. , that their internal organs would be crushed by their own bodies or some such thing....what you have explained is plenty bad enough!

I know for a fact that Apollo and Faye are still alive and thriving. Saw them myself about a month ago. My daughter is working there....these birds are enjoying as good a life as possible....with their mutilated beaks hobbling around on the stumps of toes that they have left. They have such personality and love interacting with the people working there.

First of all, the president does not have a say in the type of turkey he pardons. The birds are selected and donated by the turkey industry. I don't think they go to a farm. They go to a park. I was reading an article about the white house turkeys (the feathered kind) a few years ago. Some of them live a surprisingly long time considering what they are.
