Something no one may have noticed about the pardoned turkeys.

Turkeys are very sociable. Much more so than chickens. We have many of both and the turkeys are the funniest.

When did the whole pardon the turkey custom start anyway?

I heard some 'turkey' bopped him in the mouth today..... glad all it took was 12 stitches.

It appears the birds don't have a timed destruction built into them at all. When fed a limited, higher fiber diet, they seem to manage rather well.

Yes they do have entertainig personalities. Last week at the Farm Sanctuary, they held an event for the turkeys where they were fed a feast of pumpkin pie, cranberries etc. Crowds of people attended. The turkeys were allowed to mingle with the crowd and it was a very lucrative fundraiser for the sanctuary. It seems that Apollo has taken quite a shine to my daughter and has developed the ability to pick her out of throngs of people so that as soon as he spotted her across the yard, came a running....gobbling very excitedly! This place does amazing work with these birds and all other kinds of farm animals. And the place is spotless...not a cobweb anywhere (I thought barns were held together with cobwebs). The straw in the barns is removed everyother day, the floors swept, poo scraped, light fixtures wiped and the straw replaced. I could have quite happily rolled around in the 2 foot deep straw of the pig barn it was so clean. And the animals are spotless too! The cows were as clean and as shiny as those ready for the Royal Winter Fair and it is due mainly to the diet they are fed. Some of the adult animals they admit to the farm have never had grass under their feet and it sure is heartwarming to see them in the pristine pastures they now call home. If you want to be touched by rescue stories, go on to the Farm Sanctuary Watkins Glen website and read about some of their rescues.
