Friday I noticed one of my hens in their nesting box late at night. The next day I took her out and put her on the ground. She was standing and walking around, but walking slow. She was making her happy chicken noises and pecking the ground. After, she went back to the nesting box. There was a spot in her comb I noticed that was bleeding, just a little bit, very small spot. Other than that, her comb looked fine color wise. I was thinking she was broody. Checked on her today, her comb looks dried out, still red, but has some discoloration. It hasn’t been that cold out. She came outside with our other two chickens. One went up to her and bit her comb. Her butt was a bit of a mess, and the other chickens were picking at her butt too. We took her inside and soaked her with epsom salt. Took some pictures of her butt and put her in a crate in the basement to dry off, and so we can observe her more. Any idea what’s going on with her? Pics provided. Her butt is showing some sign to me there’s something wrong, I’m just not sure what it is.

How old is she? Is she normally low in the pecking order or picked on by others? Does she lay eggs usually, and are most shells hard? What are you feeding them? Is she eating and drinking today? How does her crop feel now, and can you check it in the morning to see if it is emptying overnight? Her poops look a bit yellow green. She might be having a reproductive problem, or stress from being picked on.

She is going to be three years old in a couple of months. She’s usually not picked on by others, this is out of the ordinary. My chickens haven’t been laying all winter, but just started to like a week or two ago. She has smaller eggs than the others, so I don’t think she has starting laying again yet because the eggs have been large. I feed them layer feed from tractor supply, they have grit and oyster shells. I don’t think she’s eating or drinking today. I took her in this morning and put some food and water down, but she hasn’t moved. Her crop didn’t feel big when touched this morning.

She just pooped that out now.

There is a lot of green bile in her droppings. I would try to hand feed her some scrambled eggs, and wet some of the feed in a small bowl. Other things to tempt eating are tuna, canned cat food, and ground meat, but fluids are most important now. If you have Poultry NutriDrench you could give 2 ml orally as a boost. I would consider worming her with Valbazen or SafeGuard.
