Sometimes I just don't understand people....animal re-homing rant

While I believe that you need to take care of your animals and not flippantly buy or rehome one, I'm a bit surprised by the caustic attitude of this post. I've found, in my short time on BYC, the members of this forum to show a level of kindness and compassion not typically seen on the internet.

I guess I just don't understand the bitterness toward these people that are rehoming a pet. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. Isn't it even remotely possible that there are other issues here that we don't know about? Family issues? Financial issues? Did everyone here foresee the economy crashing this far? Why just assume they are careless, heartless and irresponsible? I personally, would not post my life story in a craigslist ad, just to satisfy a stranger's curiosity about my motives.

I know there are irresponsible people out there. But to contact someone who is trying their best to find a home for a pet they cared about because you assume they are bad people seems so cold. They didn't just drop the dog off on a lonely road, they didn't take it to a shelter, they are trying to find it a home. Give them a break.

And speaking of which.......... there was an ad on CL yesterday where a woman was looking for a home for her dog and she stated that the boston terrier is allergic to chocolate and has seizures when she gives it to him. I tried to explain that dogs are not supposed to have chocolate and she flipped out

I also look on Craigs List Pets and it never fails to break my heart at the number of people getting rid of beloved pets. I feel that I am empathetic towards people and their individual situations but in many instances, I think people are just plain irresponsible and feel that animals are a disposable commodity...it is so sad for the poor animals who don't understand what is happening to them.

Having 7 dogs, and some are German Sheps, I couldn't ever imagine not having my babies with me. With so many houses for rent in this country I am sure IF you made a half A~s attempt to find a home which accepts dogs, you can find one in any state and any city.

You need to read between the lines. The husband is deploying. It is probably HIS dog. The wife either doesn't want to deal with it (usually because she never wanted it in the first place) or the wife's mom (who she is most likely moving in with while hubby is deployed) doesn't want to deal with it. OR wife is SAYING mom wont allow the dog as an excuse to get rid of the dog.

I agree.
I am a military spouse and have seen wives "move home". They usually are doing this because their husband will be gone and they "can't handle" or WON'T handle living on their own.
IMO most of the wives would rather not have to take the children with them either because she will have plenty of "other things" to do. That's why a lot of them move near family so they have cheap or free child care and housing.

We moved from Savannah Georgia to Fort Wainwright Alaska with a small dog. It was a pain, we didn't have room for him in the car, but we did it any how. It can be done...

I am willing to bet this is about as close to accurate as it gets. Especially since it was the man who posted the sad, heartfelt ad and the wife who wrote the snippy reply. I already assumed that anyway as I have seen it too many times.

Well, Rolsjo, there is a problem with that. First, I was not even remotely cold in my motives or in my email to these people. I was kind and tried to be helpful. And NO, the economy doesn't work here. These are military people. Her hubby didn't just get a massive pay cut or laid off work, they KNEW they would be moving long before they chose to get the dog, and military housing allows pets. I thought they might not be familiar with moving with pets. I am, so I offered to help. It was made clear they have no interest in even trying. My attitude started with sympathy for them, ended with a large distaste for their kind.

Bless you for saving your animals......I live in central MS and I so wished we had our place fenced in so we could help the people traveling with large animals......Did your place get much damage? I hope everything is okay now.

I used to deliver pizzas back in the day. I would deliver to a lot of the same houses on Ft Carson week after week. Then when hubby deployed, I would deliver to the house and wifey-poo would be totally wasted partying with her skanky friends and 5 or 6 younger single guys who did NOT get deployed. The kids were usually there witnessing this. Made me sick...and the skanks didn't tip either.
