Evening (well morning I suppose really for anyone else in uk!)

I bought my first chickens back in mid feb - a skyline and a Blackrock,

Mrs skyline lays beautifully most days and a is a happy madam!

Mrs Blackrock laid a little egg a couple of days after getting her and never again - she will be a min of 30 weeks now. She also seems to pull her own feathers out on her back/base of tail area.

A week ago, he eye was suddenly shut - I can open it but she doesn't open it herself though you can see the eye moving.

There is no gunk, smells from eyes/nose/mouth or problems with breathing or sneezing. She has been perfectly happy and is eating and drinking normally. She was quieter today though. I've been bathing it several times daily and spraying vetrycin on the whole area.

I'm wondering if it is an ear issue and not an eye issue? Eye is bright and clear when you open it, and inside of ear also looks fine.

I have liced/mited and wormed the gang from Friday to rule out one part.

I've phoned the vets locally but "they don't do chickens" - am based in the uk if anyone has any suggestions!

Any help or advice great fully received! They were fully vaccinated from breeder when bought at pol. Since bought two more chickens (introduced after she got sick) and no other chickens have any symptoms and all laying good eggs.

Is it possible that she got a scratch or pecked in the eye? Maybe some eye ointment will help as she does not act sick.

I forgot to say the area around her ear is swollen - prob 1cm circular size and about .5cm deep - it is more hard than soft, but it is not really hard - I can't feel the bones under it through it

I wonder if she has an ear infection?? Call the vet and ask them if they could at least give you some ear infection drops, can't hurt. Its possible she may have an abscess? Maybe try calling a vet out of area to see what they say. Good luck

That's what I wondered - I have found a practice listed on bhwt website so going to try there in the morning when it is open and see if we can get an appt.

Are there any better meds for ear infections?

She is more active again today as she was a little quiet yesterday, she is still eating and drinking normally - if not better than normal as she's put weight on - it's also sorted out a lot of her handling issues too as she is very timid but now she is loving the fuss!!

I noticed before you wrote that she pulls feathers out of the base of her tail. Does she have mites or lice? I do not know what to give for ear infection. I would probably use the stuff That I have leftover from myself.

I haven't been able to see any on her, and was only this week I've realised it's her - I had been blaming her Bolshy friend!

It seems to already be improving since I treated them on weds and worming also to rule that out - I gutted the coop and have put grass cuttings down (which they are loving!) so is can gut it and steam and powder it all again on mon/tues.

Good! You seem to stay on top of things. I hope she heals up real soon. ~Cheryl

We have a vet appointment for tomorrow evening... She is no better and no worse we shall see what it brings!
