Hi,

I have noticed my male duck pecks at the females back in the water. I just noticed a raw sore on the area and the female keeps "preening" herself there. How do I stop it from getting worse. Is this normal? Should I put something on it?

What is your male to female ratio?

One female, one male. Its not too agreesive and all the time but I just saw the sore and the female keeps preeening at it over and over. Worried about it staying open and getting a fly on it.

Sounds like your Drake is too aggressive for a 1:1 ratio

That is what is weird, he is not an aggressive duck at all..I would say more timid actually. I have seen him do the "peck" at back thing just a few times..I don't know if she is pecking it herself now..

I have it coated with Vicks vapor rub and antibiotic ointment.

Not all aggressive breeders are aggressive ducks. It's just part of being a duck. Some drakes are just more active than others which is why not all flocks can run on a 1:1 ratio. I hope she makes a speedy recovery though!

What beautiful ducks!!! Our guy does the same thing, but so far I haven't noticed any sores on the females. Maybe she's also just neurotic about the spot.. good thinking on the blukote - and yes, I wish someone had warned me about how messy that stuff is!!!

I think "she" is making it worse because I would not have noticed if I had not seen her preening constantly at it and the feathers were spread out..then I saw.

Does the blue-kote have to grow out? She is all purple on her back because she is spreading it everywhere with her, now purple, bill.
