Monica Mudbutt, my year old Light Brahma is acting a fool. She goes out with the girls to free range all day and acts normal, but at night, refuses to roost. She wants to stay in the nest box. She doesn't growl or puff up when I kick her off, but she is a definite pancake shape. I am trying to get 3 pullets integrated, and they like to sleep in the boxes too, but are big enough to start roosting. I blocked off the nest boxes at night with a heavy piece of plywood. Of course, Monica is p*ssed and is an absolute terror to the little ones when they go down at night. She clucks and squawks and carries on, jumping up and down off the roost to try to find a way in the nest boxes. Since she can't get in, she picks on the little ones to vent her frustrations. Ginger the Buff Orpington, usually the quieter of the flock finally had enough and straight up attacked Monica after I kicked her off the nest the first time. I tried to push Ginger away, and it was like she didn't even know I was there. Came away with a big beakfull of Monica feathers and everything.

What gives? Is she broody? Not really? I've got a Broody Buster with her name on it, but she is only exhibiting half the signs.

She's not broody just prefers to sleep in the nest box. It's good your blocking off the nests at night to try and break her of the habit. The boxes should be lower than the roosts but I don't think that's your problem. Maybe her being a very large breed needs a lower roost.
