Does any one know the sound a hen makes before they start laying? I have hens that are about to start laying their first eggs, and I just wanna know if I hear it from when I'm just up there checking on them…..

To me it sounds like gah, gah, gah. Such birds will also be looking about potential nest sites as doing so. With hens laying a clutch to brood, the sound is most prevelant during the couple days prior to first egg layed and one a couple eggs are in nest my hens start getting sneaky / quite as approaching nest.

not sure I can describe it any better than as them sounding a bit irritable about something! I've watched my youngsters walk in and out of every coop available, chattering away all the time as if they have lost something and are really rather annoyed about it! and then sure enough...you soon find a lovely little pullets egg tucked in a nesting box :-)
