Sour Crop CURED with Monistat

Pics
What other symptoms does he have that lead you to believe he has sour crop? Usually, the yeast infection won't permit digestion of food, and it sits in the crop along with a lot of liquid, making it feel like a water balloon. What has his poops been looking like? Are they thin and watery and greenish? Or are they tiny, scant and hard? When you feel his crop, does it feel like a hard, small mass in there, or is it completely empty?

My wonderful 4 year old Rhode Island Red/Black Australorp rooster's crow changed about a week ago. I thought, mmmmmm. He seemed okay but he went from a 3 syllable crow to a 2. Now he isn't eating/drinking. I'm trying to get food down him but you all know how hard that is to do. I did smell some sourness from his mouth but his crop is empty. I sure hate to lose him. He's the best rooster I have ever had. He really takes care of his gals good (food, breaks up fights, alerts when predators). Got one dose of monistat down him but he threw it up right away. I am getting down some raw egg yolk. Pray for Red!

I just went out to put the gals up and they're fighting without Red there.

He is getting lethargic now. A few fairly solid black/dark green poops. The crop is empty. He has been throwing up and that is what is sour.

How long has he been like this? Is he throwing up on his own or are you vomiting him(tilting his head so he will throw up)? Has sour crop resolved? He is lethargic from not eating, green poop usually means starvation.

Have you considered tube feeding him to get food/fluids into him, then treat the sour crop, majority of birds die from dehydration/starvation before the actual problem kills them. Birds require a constant supply of food to fuel their high metabolic bodies, without this fuel they become lethargic, body starts to shut down and they die, tube feeding often will snap them out of this state by providing food/fluids their body requires.

I have to say I love this forum, it's always been so helpful, but honestly at the same time, I have to stay away from the Disease section at times because then I start overanalyzing my feather fluffs.

I originally started poking around the section since I noticed this past Wednesday that one of my gals has diarrhea. And really, the title of this post just seemed awesomely humorous in a "that's got to be quite the unconventional cure... how did they come up with Monistat?", so I had to read it. A great and beneficial post for sure! Thanks to the OP.

So not to be paranoid with my gals, but this is what I've noticed thus far... Chicken (Easter Egger) has had diarrhea for what I can deduce to be about a week? As much as I can observe, sometimes it's a lot of clear watery liquid, and sometimes it has the green and while poo look to it, just super watery. No worms, but I can see grit now and again. In the past day or two of being able to watch her, she is drinking a lot too. Behaviorisms are that of a normal, healthy chicken. Dust bathing, foraging, running around, still has great interest in all sorts of foods, and seems to be eating normal as far as I can tell, and definitely not easily caught.

I came home from work yesterday evening and let them out for some foraging. Decided to grope Chicken a bit and see how her crop felt after reading this post. Yeah, it's pretty liquidy feeling in comparison to my other gals. So I picked up some Monistat 3, but I haven't treated. I added ACV to the water, and gave a good pre-bed snack of scrambled egg and plain greek yogurt. This morning before work I did a little more chicken groping. Chicken's crop is no longer watery, but it had a little decent sized golf ball. Nugget (Red Sex Link) also had a little decent sized golf ball, and wasn't sleeping on the roost (first time I've seen that??). Dora (Easter Egger) was almost empty with a minimal kinda squishy gumball which I will take as close to normal. (It's been a while since I felt up my chickens, I've been slacking in that department).

I try really hard not to be paranoid with them, but I know Chicken has an issue because of the diarrhea... so I know something is off with her. I have them on fermented feed, so I will cut out their free choice pellet and small amount of scratch they get til I get these resolved. Seems like a softer food diet would be beneficial.

So now I've got new questions... Do both Chicken and Nugget have impacted crops? Does Chicken have a sour crop on top of an impacted crop, thus giving her diarrhea? If Chicken doesn't have sour crop, will the Monistat 3 adversely effect her health if I dose her anyway? As of yesterday evening, my gals are all acting normal. How long can I experiment with egg & yogurt and egg & olive oil plus ACV in the water before I may see a decline in health if this is what they have?

Thanks all!!!

Betsy, your roo is probably lethargic from dehydration. You need to get some fluids and electrolytes into him. Squirt it down his throat with a syringe if he won't drink it. You can use Gatoraid if you don't have regular chicken vitamin-electrolyte solution. As for what could be wrong with him, I wish I could be more help. Perhaps someone will drop by and see this and come up with something.

Snowkitten, if your chickens have impacted crop, the ones with hard clumps in the crops, squirt some olive oil down their throats and massage the crop until you feel it soften. That usually does the trick.

He needs to be inside where it's warm, 80-85 degrees is best. Then hydration must be corrected before attempting to force feed, period. He needs fluids first, food later and both should be tubed if he isn't drinking and eating on his own. Fluids should be given orally at 30ml/kg every 6-8 hours. Sounds like he needs to see a vet.

He's downstairs in the shower. I am getting some fluids down him but he is throwing it up.
