Our first flock, and already one of our girls is sick! Her squishy little crop isn't huge, and so far there is no odor. She is still eating and drinking and acting normal, so we figure we caught it at the beginning stages. I have read the other threads on BYC and done lots and lots of research. We are currently syringing her with olive oil. I haven't noticed any changes, good or bad, but it has only been 2 days.

I am thinking we should try something different, but I don't want this to go on forever, so the next remedy I try, I want to work quickly. What works?? Yogurt with extra cultures? Liquid probiotics? Monistat? ACV? And is separating her from the others and not letting her eat for 24 hours necessary? She is super attached to the other girls, and she will cry *very loudly* if I take her away.

Any advice will help... Thanks!

Why do you think she has an impacted crop/sour crop? With sour crop there is a sour smell, with impacted, the crop stays full and usually chickens cannot eat. You do not have to separate her from the other chickens, unless you are monitoring her or condition is dire.

How old is your girl, and does she have grit?

She is almost 16 weeks old and yes she gets grit. She has a golf ball sized lump in her chest that feels like a water balloon. I have read cases where sour crop isn't necessarily accompanied by the sour smell, or at least it's not detectable. The lump is not hard, so I guess that means it's not impacted. Other than the lump, everything else about her is perfectly normal. I am very new to this. I only know what I have read and researched. I just don't want to lose one of my girls. My whole family would be crushed...

Reason i was asking is often sour crop is a result of impacted crop. Strange no smell, How long has she had this for? Several people have used monistat to treat sour crop, all have reported success. The dose was cut the three tablets that come with monistat into 1/3,you end up with 9 pieces(i would cut them even smaller because of the age of your girl)give 1 cut tablet 2 times a day. Her crop is not empty in the morning, before eating, stays full all the time?

Yes, it is always full. I check her in the morning and in the evenings, and several times a day. The girls have a routine where they want to be held and petted in the evenings before they go inside. I found that this was always a great time to not just bond with them, but also examine them. I am always thorough, I feel under their wings, on their chest, the bottoms of their feet, etc. They think I'm just petting them and they purr and trill. I only noticed the lump on June Bug two days ago. I have been giving her a teaspoon of olive oil every day, but letting her eat her food and graze as usual.

I have seen the Monistat idea. And in every case I read, the results were positive. I am going to watch her for a few more days and see if there is any change. If it has not gotten better then, or if it gets worse, I will try the Monistat.

Do not wait to long,if the crop muscle is stretched for a length of time,it may not go back into shape.

Funny i have a June bug too,her name is Juniper but i call her Juni bug.

Here is a link on Sour crop,Impacted crop and Pendulous crop.

Thanks a lot. I will certainly check it out.

Well I can't say it is "full" so much as always swollen. At least for the last 2 days. Like a small squishy golf ball, not centered, off to the right of her chest a little. I do observe her eating and drinking and it doesn't seem to have changed. I don't know if she is just a little "backed up" or what. I have never dealt with this before. They are given crumbles and grit along with fruits and veggies. Actually, I just remembered we gave the girls unsalted sunflower kernels a few days ago. Could this be why she is having this issue? The other girls are just fine.

The last case of impacted crop in mine didn't end well. But I did find out that cause was sunflower seeds. The husks get trapped and don't break down. I still buy feed with sun flower in it , but everything in moderation.
