So last night, my 5mo pullet was showing signs of sour crop. She was staying away from the others, kind of hunkered down with her feathers out, mouth open and not really grazing. I picked her up an turned her around to check her vent and clear fluid poured out of her mouth. I felt her crop and it was like a squishy water balloon. I was prepared to go get the meds this morning, but when I went out and checked on her, she seems fine! She is running around, talking with the girls, her crop feels empty, acting like last night never happened. Was I wrong in thinking she had sour crop? Should I treat her anyways? All of the others are fine.

If her crop was empty in the morning, she would not have sour crop. A sour crop does not empty overnight and will still be squishy and water ballon like in the morning. It is good if her crop is emptying overnight. I would just monitor her crop for a few days to see if she is having problems with it emptying.

Did the stuff that came out stink like holy hell?? I’m having that issue with one of my birds and I’m not sure what to do.

What ended up happening with yours? Mine is experiencing the same thing as your first description.
An impacted crop is different than sour crop... the crop becomes impacted first and if not treated will turn into sour crop, as it doesn’t allow the food to leave the crop and it ferments and “sours.” If your bird is experiencing and impacted crop but you do not smell a horrific odor when you open it’s mouth, thats sour crop.
If you’re not sure, The first step is to isolate the bird so that it cannot eat... provide water but no food overnight. The crop empties naturally overnight so if you deprive her of food for 24 hours and her crop is still full in the am then you know it’s impacted. That needs to be dealt with before it turns sour.
