Sour Crop

Antibiotics are not good for sour crop--they can make it worse. I realize you were treating her for possible aspiration, but just thought to mention it.

Very true... Just gave a hen a full blown yeast infection from treatment with Baytril.

I have always found mornings easier to vomit them. Its not as thick. If she will eat her normal food mushy like baby food, i would leave it at that. You want it to easily pass through her crop. Egg yolk that is boiled dissolves nicely when they eat it and very nutritious. Keep it simple. Vomiting is always scary, it doesn't ever feel easy when you have to do it. Mine aspirated as well. Don't give her any oil, that can cause pneumonia when they aspirate.

Yes I know, but she is tons better and I wonder if she didn't have a bacterial infection not fungal, I am doing both though now because she did aspirate and was not breathing well, so as long as she is improving I think I will continue. She was eating eggs but now she won't but she did eat some grated apple, tiny pieces of salad greens and some of the chick food. She is hungrier tonight. I think she is also getting very spoiled! She also would no eat yogurt and when I did the probiotics on two separate occasions she really blew up, I hope she can add them in though later. I think it was just too fermented and gassy at the time. Any other ideas on food? She did not like apple sauce either!

I was thinking that too, the poor thing is having so many meds though I might wait. The good news is she is eating but just not the chick food, so I don't have to tube feed her or force feed her. She is more bright and alert and her crop has not filled up for 48 hours now. It's not quite normal but she is eating and pooping (very loose though) and everything is passing through as far as I can tell. I started the other 5 chickens on the organic Scratch and Peck food now, but I don't think she can handle it yet. She ate some brown rice cooked very soft though. I will worm her and the others as soon as she is off these meds though. They came from a hatchery as baby chicks, 4 from one that were a lot healthier (she was in this batch) and two that came from the feed store, who are red sex-linked and bully the others! This one speckled sussex, the silver laced wyandotte and the delaware, and black sex-linked are wonderful. I know it's not always good to mix breeds but I have a nine year old, what can I say! LOL

She is doing better, but the other chickens are bullying her, I had her separated in the inner coop but she was not eating or drinking much, so brought her in again. Plus it is meant to be very cold tonight. Anyhow going to see what she does. She is bright and alert and her crop is not filling up, it is still bigger than normal but that is to be expected I think. Going to keep her in for a few more days and see how she does, husband being a pill about it but he is out of town in the week.
