Sour crop??

and as for the chicken opening her beak with each breath.......I think it depends how bad the crop is filled up. I had a Speckled Sussex this spring with the issue and her crop would fill up fast. She definitely would open her beak while breathing. I think it was due to how heavy and uncomfortable the crop would get. I always thought it seemed like she was trying to throw up, but could really manage it herself. I had to manually empty her crop for almost a week.
