Joycats,

We learned long ago, warmth is better then fashion. SO when we got the CHickens, Robert found the coveralls, and bought himself one. We call it the Chicken suit. Yep, I now have you too. They were definitly worth every bit we paid. Now I have had horses for many years, why didnt he think of the chicken suit then, well, because these are His Chickens and I told him he had to go out in the cold and wet to take care of them :)

I love my BLRWs. The only extra I have right now is a one eyed roo that is freezer bound. He isn't quality enough for a breeding program. He is out of a roo I sold back in the summer. However, the BLRWs I have in breeding now are especially awesome.

those are beautiful!!! only chick that i want and dont have is Duccles and those.

I have d'Uccles, too.

This is a kinda "in your face" breed. Always wanting to know what you have and where did you hide it. I love opening their coop every day and have them hop up for kisses and petting. Hugs are not met with screaming, which is really nice.

Amy has the most awsome dark BLRWs!!! I had one of her chicks but lost it to the bout of cocci I had not long ago...lost 3 out of 12 that were in that brooder...so far NO OTHER SICKNESS!!! I was using shaving and hear that can help it go rampamt!! Now I use puppy pads and paper until way older!!

so you have some for sale?

The only thing I have for sale is boys right now. I plan to sell eggs from my d'Uccles later in the spring and will probably hatch a few out. Since I am always so blessed with boys I may have to hatch out a lot to make pairs.

I do love my dark BLRW. It is also hard to get the correct shade of red, too. That splash has such gorgeous lacing though that I am endeared to her, as well.

And yes, hard lesson learned on the shavings but I always lost so many chicks when on shavings and the mortality rate has decreased tremendously since I don't put them on shavings until they feather out. Molds and fungus just grow like crazy with shavings. I haven't tried puppy pads but love my feed bags and of course, I use newspaper the first few days with excellent results.

On a different subject why am I having such terrible hatching rates? I've been practicing with the eggs mine have been laying. Had some going strong and doing awesome for 10 days then POOF. DEAD. I looked at them last night and there was a huge blood ring. Opened the eggs and had little mini chickens that looked like a tadpoles (eyes and a tail still) I think 2 nights ago when I added new eggs the temperature didn't go back up for a LONG time. As in I added them that night and by morning the temp was still hovering like 97. Do you think that was my issue? Getting mad at my LG incubator! I have a digital temp thing in there that reads temp and humidity. Humidity stays above 20 and around 20-30. Temp right now after some adjustments is at 100.5 ish.

There are some tricks to the LG. SO many people have problems with it. I loved mine until I set it on the deck to air dry and the turkey tried to roost on it and broke the bottom side. . Dumb bird.

Blood rings are a sign of germs, basically. And IMO the stryofoam ones can hold that bacteria in there once it has been introduced to the warm, moist environment.

After the eggs that are in there now either hatch or die...

I would recommend not adding more eggs until you clean it with a bleach & water solution, rinse well, then air it dry. Once it is dry, I usually give it 24 hours to dry , put the top on and let it set 2-3 days and come to temp without water or anything to dry it more.
I have found the only time I really have to do this is if I get any blood rings.

Once you get this done after this hatch, PM me and I will help you out some more :)

Only way to NOT have problems with shavings is use a small amount, a very thin layer, and change them daily. That is a pain so I use paper towels the first week. Then whatever I want until week 4 then shavings after 4 weeks. Well depends on size of chicks...my silkies are still small at 4 weeks so I actually use the thin layer of shavings for them starting then.
